Weird monument in Wales has interesting history {Gadling}

Dec 7th 2011 1:45PM In Virginia (USA) you can visit a monument to Stonewall Jackson's left arm. The Civil War general was shot during a particularly chaotic battle on rough terrain with little visibility, probably (accidentally) by his own Confederate troops. His left arm had to be amputated and is buried near the battle site, with a memorial erected there.

Jackson was sent to a farmhouse in the surrounding countryside to recuperate and was expected to make a full recovery. Unfortunately, infection set in and the beloved general died. His commander, General Robert E. Lee, was grief-stricken. "Jackson has lost his left arm," he said. "And I have lost my right." Jackson's body, minus the arm, was buried at the farm where he died. So Virginia has two Stonewall Jackson gravesites, one of them just for his arm.

Mom Says Son's Life Was Saved Because of Facebook {ParentDish}

Jul 15th 2011 11:48PM Read the article before you criticize. The mom already was taking the child to the doctor. She was sitting in the waiting room with him when she posted the photo online. She didn't post the photo to get her son diagnosed via Facebook; she was using it to vent her frustration and to let her friends know what was going on.

Delta Air Lines charges returning soldiers for checked bags {Gadling}

Jun 8th 2011 8:44AM Airlines should not be charging ANYONE, military or civilian, for a reasonable amount of checked baggage. That should be a basic part of an airline's service that we're paying the big ticket prices for.

5 Mistakes You're Making With Cupcakes, And How to Avoid Them {Kitchen Daily}

May 28th 2011 9:15AM #1 makes no sense. We're never supposed to try a new recipe? Excuse me, but the only way to "suss out" a recipe and see if it works for you is to try it. You can't perfect it if you never try it in the first place.

Mom Defends Decision to Give 8-Year-Old Daughter, Britney Campbell, Botox (Video) {Stylelist}

May 12th 2011 8:39PM The Botox is only a symptom. The real problem is kiddie beauty pageants and our appearance-obsessed culture that condones them. The mom says on camera that the pageant world is brutal. So why does she immerse her daughter in it at all?

Galley Kitchen Ideas: Surprise! You've Got Space {Shelterpop}

May 12th 2011 9:24AM The tips are vague and generally useless, and the pictures do not show galley kitchens. In fact, the kitchens shown are quite large, by most people's standards. I'm finding this more and more in decorating magazines: articles about making the best of a "small" kitchen of, say, only 20 x 25 feet. The editors are living in some kind of McMansion wonderland. My galley kitchen is 7 feet wide, and I've seen plenty that are smaller. Hint to editors: If you can fit a large island like the one in photo #2, it's not a small kitchen.

Nutritional Labels for Booze? {Slashfood}

Mar 8th 2011 3:51PM I can't see any good reason not to label alcohol. True, nobody drinks beer because it's good for them, but a lot of people -- even beer drinkers -- keep track of their overall count of calories, carbs, and such over the course of a day. Labeling alcohol bottles would help them keep track. More information about what you're putting into your body is a good thing. You can still choose what to drink and how much, but people who want those choices to be informed choices should have easy access to that information. Those who don't care are free to ignore the labels.

New California Law Mandates Whooping Cough Booster Shot for Teens {ParentDish}

Jan 5th 2011 1:02PM Most of the infants who come down with pertussis contract it before they've had their full series of vaccinations. My nephew had whooping cough at 1 month old; the first of the series is typically not administered until 2 months of age, and the child isn't fully protected until all the shots in the series have been administered. My nephew was lucky; he had only a mild case of the illness. But his mom caught it as well. (Some people who received the vaccination in the 1960s, as she did, were given a weaker vaccine which turned out not to protect as well over time.) Her case of whooping cough, when her son was a newborn, was more serious and has left her with some permanent lung damage.

Buyers Want Out of Serial Killer's Former Home {Housingwatch}

Sep 22nd 2010 11:14PM They fell in love with the house before they knew what had happened there. They can still salvage the situation. The family should take the $250,000 and use it to completely remodel the home, reclaiming it as their own.
