Online Bullying: The Side of It You Don't Know {Just So You Know}

Jul 12th 2010 9:05AM Cyberbullying is a major problem. In some ways it can be even worse than being bullied at school. You have a group of cowards get online and some of the attacks are brutal. Heck, people have committed suicide over it and why the government won't do something is beyond me. There is a company in California called Topix that has forums in every city and town in America and many of those forums are just brutal. They don't require registration and the forums are unmoderated basically. This means anyone can go in and attack and it goes out immediately. It is an awful company. What kind of company doesn't approve its messages before it goes out over the internet. Libel is a crime and yet being are being libeled every second of the day and this company refuses to do anything about the cyberbullying.

Is a Site That Lets You Anonymously Rate Colleagues a Good Idea? {Lemondrop}

Jul 2nd 2010 10:33PM No it is a horrible idea. It just gives people an excuse to trash someone else hiding behind a computer and acting like a complete coward. If something like that is allowed you should have to provide a valid email and if you review a worker, the forum should be heavily moderated. Also no personal attacks on one's character, their family, or things that don't amount to a hill beans such as the way they dress, etc. That type of site gives people who lack morals a free opportunity to trash someone else and possibly ruin their reputation or career. I hate when people claim "freedom of speech." Our forefathers did not mean a person has freedom to libel someone. That type of a site is a bad idea. I mean heck look a company like Topix for example. That is the trashiest site on the internet and they profit from people's misery. Those sort of sites are disgusting.

Woman sued over online review: 3 tips to avoid a lawsuit {WalletPop}

Jul 2nd 2010 10:24PM It comes down to what was said and how it was stated. People misconstrue "freedom of speech." There is a difference between freedom of speech and libel. If you are stating your experience and not intentionally telling lies or attacking the owner's character etc that is one thing, if you are personally trying to destroy the owner's reputation it is something else. The biggest thing is all sites should have moderation so if things like libel and defamation of character occur they are never posted online. I also think a business is a little bit different than an attack on an individual personally. This lawsuit is a lot different than let's say the cyberbullying that occurs far too often on some of the social networking site, some of those things are brutal and can destroy lives and reputations, that is the sort of thing freedom of speech doesn't actually cover, saying whether you like the taste of a hamburger or not is something different. Just moderate forums online instead of allowing free for alls without accountability and it would solve a lot of problems. I have a lot more problem with cowardly users who attack private citizens on some of these networking sites than I do something like this.
