The first time I tried it, I could almost hear my skin give a sigh of relief!

One of the worst abuses against US tech people is the H1-B Visa Program. It allows US companies to hire tens of thousands of foreign workers, mostly for software work. Supposedly it was a way for them to fill the gap in their hiring.
Instead, the companies won't even look at a US national until, say, April, when all the H1 visas have been doled out.
That's the opposite of how it was meant to work.

Fortunately, the demand for H1-B visas has dried up a considerable amount.
