Dec 8th 2009 12:46AM I had been dating a guy for about three months when Christmas rolled around. I remembered that he told me about a painting by a specific artist he loved as a kid, and so I bought a print of it for him. Nice, thoughtful, cool-looking, right?
What he got me was a candle holder that was literally a wooden man huddled in a fetal position, appearing to be crying. When a candle was burned in this candleholder of sadness, the wax dripped onto the crying man's back.
So I guess it didn't come as a surprise when, quite a bit later, I discovered how profoundly depressed this man was. We broke up, but I should have gotten a clue that first Christmas.
