Mother of Down Syndrome Boy Helping Son Find Sex {Lemondrop}

Mar 17th 2009 9:23PM Because Down Syndrome is a trisomy, it is very unlikely that this young man will even be capable of having children. Fertility amongst both males and females is reduced; males are usually unable to father children, while females demonstrate significantly lower rates of conception relative to unaffected individuals. I believe that there have been only three recorded instances of males with Down syndrome fathering children. Also it is, indeed, a 50% chance that if he was able to have a child, the offspring would have Down Syndrome too. When the chromosomes split to form sperm, usually there are one per gamete but in the case of a trisomy, half will have two 21st chromosomes and half will have one.

What a sad situation. I hope Otto finds companionship and realizes that there is more to a relationship than sex.
