Opinion: Students Should Not 'Friend' Teachers Online {ParentDish}
Aug 13th 2010 4:59PM I don't "friend" any students until after they have graduated.
Anti-Immigrant Song: "Illegal Aliens in My Yard" {Cuelate}
Dec 24th 2009 11:31AM Mexico controlled California from 1821 to 1848. "White" people have controlled it for far longer. That is probably why "they feel they have more rights to this land than anyone else."
Roasted Baby on Spit Was 'Too Much' for 'Road' Director {PopEater}
Nov 28th 2009 10:55PM ironage002 - The apocolypse was probably caused by our attempts to recover from the eight years of George Bush's presidency.
NFL Ad Takes Aim at Simpson's Weight {PopEater}
Oct 14th 2009 7:39PM As usual, a woman is being targeted for nothing more than her physical appearance. Simple minds-simple pleasures. But if you read the article closely you would have read that "Burger King Corp. did not have any editorial input in the creation of the animation that ran last Sunday, and no one from Burger King Corp. approved it before it aired." Burger King is a sponsor of Fox Sports they didn't create the ad.
Bloggers Up in Arms Over Maybe-Sexist T-Shirt {Lemondrop}
Oct 11th 2009 3:27PM If this t-shirt is about "F'n Spartans Up Since 1962", why don't they show a football player getting done by the other team's mascot? They are the ones losing the games! Why are they degrading the cheerleaders and not the football players? Simply because it is always so much easier to denegrate women. Or is it just funnier?
Six In-Demand Jobs and How to Get Them {Careers Articles - Online Degrees}
Jul 17th 2009 2:15PM Where are the teaching jobs? Not in California. These last few years I've watched my colleauges deal with layoffs year after year. Districts are cutting work days and we are taking pay cuts. The 20 to 1 class size is being done away with all over the state. I've been teaching for 16 years, but I couldn't imagine starting now.
Americans Trounced by British in International Spelling Bee {Lemondrop}
Feb 15th 2009 4:49PM L,
Maybe I should move to Long Island. I've taught in California for 16 years and don't make 90K+ even with a Bachelors, Masters, Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and four Supplementary Authorizations. We get ten sick days a year - one for each month we work. In order to move on the salary schedule, I must constantly continue my education. My work day is from 7:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. That is student time. That doesn't include the time I spend planning, grading, talking to parents, helping students after school and attending required meetings? Everyone has been to school, so everyone thinks they know what it is like to be a teacher. They are so wrong.
I would have no problem being payed according to MY performance. How are you going to judge my performance? My students are all second language learners. Many have parents who don't speak English and can not help with homework. A portion of them come from migrant families. They are socioeconomically disadvantaged. Many have family members who are involved in gangs or are incarcerated. Students in these situations often have more on their minds than learning to read and write proficiently in English. My desire to teach my students is not always matched by their desire to learn. If you are going to judge a teacher's performance on her students' scores, you are going to have an even harder time trying to find teachers to teach the socioeconomically disadvantaged. Why teach students with all these challenges when I could just teach gifted students or those with strong parental support?
I agree all students deserve a quality education, but the problems with education are multifaceted. You need to look at parents, teachers, administrators, students, and our local and federal governments.
