Oct 4th 2010 3:19PM In a near frontier one-room school, I was the smallest boy.
For two years, I watched one huge bully go through lunches, hold boys upside down and shake them to see what fell out of their pockets. What fell, he took, no matter how trivial.
At about 50 lbs. entering the fourth grade, as expected I became a target of this 220 lb. 6'3" terror.
Knowing it was coming, I had a length of strap steel hidden in my boot top. When he attacked on the road near the school, I dropped pulled the steel and used the edge on his shins. While he was howling, the steel worked on his jaw, nose, scalp and groin.
After that, the equalizer was in my boottop, even when my high school principal/football coach sent one of his stars to "take me apart," even though he outweighed me by 140 lbs.
That was the last time I needed the steel strap.
During a half century working closely with schools, I have only known one or two schools where bullying was adequately controlled.
A high percentage of teachers and administrators regard it as normal contact between students.
Even when a student comes to class after lunch or recess with a bloody nose, bleeding lips, contusions and abrasions.
Reality, it is easier to look the other way.
Having been there, the subjects of bullying need to get an equalizer which does not appear to be any such thing, and don't be afraid to use it.
Dropping to the ground, or floor and driving a blow into the shins will start their victory. Once they are started, don't hestitate to "whup up" on the bully. Do it fast, keep your body between witnesses and where you are hitting and try to get it completed within 15-20 seconds maximum.
My rule, they start -- I finish.
As the smallest boy, 89 lbs. as a senior, there was no choice. If I was ever beaten, I could never stop running.

FIRST -- Freeman supplied the MCD's commercial from his files.
That's the way it works.
His studio, agent, manager or the guest himself provides the clip.
The actor, Morgan Freeman, sold that "Acting" reaction and it was funny.
Funny, Hell it was PERFECT!!
But that is Morgan Freeman, whether the washed up gunman in Eastwood's "UNFORGIVEN," or the washed up fighter and gym rat in "MILLION DOLLAR BABY."
Or, that incredible performance in 'SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION" or any of his other roles, lead, featured, character or bit part.
Morgan Freeman is merely one of the world's great cinema actors.
There remain Nicholson, Hackman, Penn, Depp, Eastwood, and a handful of others.

THE FACTS FROM A VETERAN WHO MUST RELY UPON VA MEDICAL SERVICES--Throughout the Bush/Cheney years, VA services were cut and cut and cut.
Chicago's central VA hospital was closed by Bush/Cheney.
Within days of the Obama/Biden administration, improvements began. One of the first Obama Executive Orders was to improve VA services.
We now are about 18 months into the Obama administration.
VA Medical Services to us "Old Farts" from WWII, Korea and Viet Nam -- Grenada, Panama, Somalia, Lebanon, Kosovo and Serbia, etc. -- have improved to near complete service and care.
Where two years ago, disabled veterans were being told to wait for treatment until finances were available -- TODAY, if the care is needed immediately, it is provided.
Even while still in uniform, wounded soldiers were discovered surviving in slum conditions at Walter Reed in the Bush era.
President Obama and VP Biden make frequent surprise visits to Walter Reed. Mrs. Obama, who was a top executive in a major Chicago hospital, is known to walk into different military and VA hospitals unannounced, coming in with her Secret Service detail at all hours, via the Ambulance, employees' or out-patient entrances. No press, no publicity for most of these visits. Just making sure the troops are getting top medical service. Bush closed hospitals and ignored problems.
If a new veteran, suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, needs help now -- it is there for him.
Two years ago, with Bush/Cheney -- He could only be advised to hang on until resources would be available.
When the coffins arrived at Andrews Air Force Base, Bush and Cheney were never there with the grieving families.
With President Obama and Joe Biden, even at Two and Three A.M.-- one of them has been there quite often. If their schedules prevented them from being there personally, one of the closest members of the administration is usually present.
Even when Mrs. Obama visited a nearby military base, she met with the families of enlisted men, "excusing" the officers, so she could meet privately with the families and learn directly what their problems have been with their Husbands and Wives in Iraq -- Sometimes both parents over there in combat.
Not care -- the haters will never recognize these people have lived caring lives.
Unlike George W. Bush who was born with a diamond encrusted golden spoon, spent life from his teens to middle age as a complete alcoholic and was promoted by his "Oil Patch" family into office with absolutely no qualifications.
Unlike Dick Cheney, who amassed a personal fortune in the }Oil Patch" and kept his Halliburton stock secure in a blind trust, while he made certain Halliburton and its KBR subsidiary received NO BID Contracts for Katrina Relief and Iraq/Afghanistan. Contracts resulting in flawed construction where dozens of servicemen and women were fatally electrocuted under contracts where Army auditors have detected more than $100 BILLION in fraudulent billings by the KBR operation alone.
Bush/Cheney left out people in thin-skinned unarmoured vehicles for six years.
Obama told the Pentagon brass before his innauguration that he would demand heavily armoured vehicles be made available.
Dick Cheney was shown on the left half of CNN's screen, declaring U.S. soldiers in Iraq were not salvaging armour plate from junk yards to weld onto their HumVees as protection -- At the same time, the right side of that CNN screen showed soldiers welding the scrap steel onto their vehicles -- AT THE SAME INSTANT.
WITH BUSH/CHENEY, our troops never received the safer vehicles, other than existing Striker brigades.
That was caring -- Republican style.

Aug 2nd 2010 12:28PM Where were THE RESPONSIBLE ADULTS -- Parents, business managers, judges overseeing child actors, studio executives, producers and directors -- let alone the adult performers and set workers when this child was spinning out of control under the pressure of being an 18-hour per day performer.
The child was on call 23/7 during location shooting -- no time to be a child.
Lots of people made lots of money and all they cared about was that the child made it for them.
How does anyone think that child could develop normally, surrounded by people who were sucking her blood and ignoring what the child needed and should have been provided?
Blame Lindsay!!!

As a Southern Born Republican.
THE CARPIN, MOANING, WHINING CRITICS of this POresident are worse than sickening -- they are lying, deceitful parasites.
Like many veterans, I rely upon VA Medical Services.
Improvement within those medical services beginning as soon as Barack Obama took the oath of office, has been well above superb and incredibly welcome.
DubYah Bush and his draft-dodging V., and the draft-dodging Sec. of Defense Donnie Rumsfeld stripped as much support as possible from the the Veterans Affairs Administration.
The downtown Chicago VA Medical Center was closed.
DubYah went AWOL from his rigorous duti4es with the Texas Air National Guard his daddy7's influence got him into, jumped ahead of a long waiting line of applicants -- and he went AWOL from looking after legitimate veterans and from his other offricial duties -- spending almost a third of his first two years on vacation or holidays.
In contrast, this president works 18/7 and after 16 months, we can count his breaks from the jom\b on the fingers of one hand -- not including the thumb.
At le4ast we needn't be concerned this President will arrive via a propellor driven mail plane to strut across a carrier deck in a jet jockey's pressure suit!!!!!
Maybe some of these Obama Bashers wouled like to explain the conditions exposed at Walter Reed during DubYah's non-administration.
Maybe you can explain Shotgun Cheney live on CNN, declaring our troops were not welding scrap steel on the thin-skinned HumVees for IED protection -- while on the split screen cameras in Iraq showed our soldiers welding scrap steel for armor.
Empty ceremonies and hollow lip service are the Hallmark of DubYah.
This president SERVES veterans and America, not his cronies' wallets.
Let's hear it for NO Bid contracts for Haliburton and KBR -- so they can charge ten prices for buildings which have electrocuted dozens of servicemen and women.
Blame Obama for cleaning up two mis-managed wars, protecting our troops in combat theaters and feeding Taliban to the Predators.
Let Joe Biden lay the wreath, let th President spend a few days in the home he and Mrs. Obama worked to have on their own, without an oil-soaked, "Saudi buddy" family paying for it.

DubYah, having merged his bankrupt Arbusto Oil Co. into Harkins Petroleum, where he served on the board, until named to a two-man committee to plan the dissolution of now-bankrupt Harkins -- only to dump his stock the next day. Just a slight mater of totally illegal insider trading, which somehow got ignored;
Poppa Bush presided over deficit spending, military mis-adventures ad nauseum, a serious recession (remember farm auctions, farm/home/business foreclosures, AND accumulated more federal debt than all previous administrations combined;
DubYah, almost tripled his father's national debt record, destroyed the economy of the U.S. and most of the world, mis-managed two wars, allowed $5.00+ gas during a time of surplus crude oil supplies and left the nation in total fiscal disarray.

May 12th 2010 2:08AM The Utah GOP caucus system fiasco simply proved caucus states must reform their vulnerable game.
The Neo-Con takeover of the Utah GOP convention was simply proof a small, well-organized, lock-stepping group of extremists (i.e. -- Brown Shirts in 1930s Germany) can gain control.
Put a handful of activists in each of the poorly attended GOP county delegate caucus sessions and select State Convention delegates.
Often some of the same people show up in several counties. After all, we are all "good ol' boys" and there is no need to check you against county voting registrations -- My Hell, man -- we're just happy to see someone show up for these county meetings."
Utah has so few counties, with delegate numbers weighted to the Salt Lake Valley counties, not that much effort, time or expense is required.
Probably no more than 500, possibly 1,000 people were needed to control the state convention.
Naturally, their propaganda arm is beating the drums, saying the Utah GOP has swung to the extreme right.
Even in ultra conservative Utah, 99% of the GOP ain't extremist.
If Mr. and Mrs. Average Utah Republican allows this hijacking of their political process -- they deserve to lose Senator Bennett's seniority.
Let them succeed in this and when Orrin Hatch is up for reelection, the modern Brown Shirts will have him tagged as Karl Marx's younger brother.

Apr 18th 2010 8:51PM The recent remake of "3:10 To Yuma" is nothing but a typical blood, gore, violence, foul language and inaccurate portrayal of that era.
Gratuitous violence, death by burning inside a locked stagecoach, an outlaw leader killing one of the band in plain sight of the others.
How ridiculous can writers and directors be?
The creators of this disaster would have today's city slickers actually believe a half-dozen outlaws mounted on exhausted horses after an 80 mile chase after a decoy stagecoach -- turned around and raced full out to catch men on much fresher horses -- within a distance of less than 500 miles.
Do the math, people, exhausted horses would have died attempting to cover more than 15 miles daily, with anything less than 12 hours rest the first day of the pursuit.
That puts the quarry, 150 miles in the lead.
The second day, the pursuing horses are still capable of traveling 25 miles, against the quarry's mounts traveling 40 miles at least.
Then the pursuers must fan out and "cut sign" to make sure they are on the right track, losing another half day.
Such a pursuit was absolutely impossible.
Comparing this standard modern all action, no acting nonsense, with the brilliantly underplayed original with Glenn Ford is a disgrace.
That's akin to "Magnum" fans enthusing about Tom Selleck's "Monte Walsh" -- thereby displaying their ignorance of those last years of the open range Western United States and the fact they did not get to meet Lee Marvin's incredible original "Monte Walsh."
Next some moneygrubber will decide to remake Charlton Heston's "WILL PENNY."
