Table for One - Red Wine Risotto {Slashfood}
Oct 8th 2009 10:24PM Forgive me if this is a super basic question, but is the rice cooked beforehand?? I have never made risotto and I can't seem to find out if it uses raw or semi-cooked rice. Thank you!!
What Can I Get You Folks? - Server Errors That Servers Hate {Slashfood}
Aug 26th 2009 1:19PM I absolutely HATE it when a server can't tell me about the menu. You work there; even if you haven't had the dish, you should know SOMETHING about it! I also don't excuse slowness when I can see the server chatting with other servers, hanging around, etc.
We also dock points if we go thirsty. If my glass is empty, and has been sitting on the edge of my table for five full minutes, and the server has been walking around but never actually looks my way, we don't give 20%. If the conversation at the table grows into 'wish the server would come by to get me a refill' instead of pleasant chit-chat or whatever we're meeting to discuss, that's a bad sign. Even if he or she is busy, a quick nod or "I'll be back in just a moment" makes me feel like I haven't been forgotten.

'Mastering the Art of French Cooking' Tops New York Times Bestseller List {Slashfood}
Aug 24th 2009 7:09PM Actually, I loved the book and thought about buying a copy of MtAoFC but realized I really never would make anything from it. I am verrrrry picky about which cookbooks I own, and only keep ones I know I'll use over and over. Otherwise, I'd buy it on the strength of J&J!

Picky Eaters and Vegans - The Hungry Bride {Slashfood}
Jun 5th 2009 11:07PM Echoing other sentiments here. I think it's always nice to offer options, but if it means setting up more stations or paying a lot more, you have to draw the line somewhere. I do highly, highly agree that things should be labeled (or the servers should know what they're serving). My husband has a seafood allergy, and I am allergic to mangoes. Neither is life-threatening but both are very intense and uncomfortable. We have learned to ask before eating anything, and once we know what's in it, we can make decisions for ourselves.
The Right Way to Use a Knife {Slashfood}
May 18th 2009 3:51PM I knew about step 2, but step 1 is new to me. I will definitely be trying this hand position next time I chop veg!!
Restaurant Music Volume - Ambience with a Side of Hearing Loss {Slashfood}
May 14th 2009 2:02PM There is a place here that serves buffalo wings and similar fare. I am sure it would be great for a big party to watch a football game, but for dinner it's heinous. My husband and I met another couple there for dinner one night and we literally had to shout at each other to converse. The food wasn't bad (the barbecue was actually really good), but I will not ever go back. I also often ask them to turn the music down at Starbucks, as they play it very loud in the local ones I visit. Music choice isn't such an issue; it's the volume that makes it hard to talk. If I wanted to spend an evening out without talking, I'd eat alone!
