Storytime Goes Digital - Should We Be Afraid? {ParentDish}

Dec 20th 2010 1:31AM 1st, I have a 3 year old daughter. Until she's much, much older and can read well on her own, I will NOT let her use 1 of these digital readers. I think that kids need to be read to by a real person. Sure there are environmental benefits to digital books. We recycle her old books so I don't feel so bad about cutting down trees to make new 1's. There's bonding that happens when reading a book that just doesn't take place any other time. There's the feel of a book in her hand, being able to carefully look at every picture, every printed letter. My daughter "reads" her books without me often just by looking at the pictures and making up her own story. What about language learning? Even if there is some "voice" reading the story to the child, it's just not the same as a real person's face-to-face tone. When you read a book with a child, you can ask them questions to help them gain more than just entertainment value. Often my daughter asks me questions about the books we read that I never would have thought of on my own! We've looked up information on instruments after reading Dr. Seuss, talked about why it doesn't snow where princess Jasmine lives - a digital reader would never have that kind of involvement! Once they're older, it's fine for a kid to have an ereader. But I truly believe that young children really NEED to be read to from paper books.

Opinion: Careful, Son, Your Helping Hand Could End Up in Cuffs {ParentDish}

Jun 17th 2010 3:38PM Looks like this kid was just trying to help. I would have done the same thing & I'm a parent! If I saw a lost child standing at a register & what appeared to be her mother heading out the door, I would have followed the would-be mom too! I agree with the person who said that they never help anyone period. This day & age I'm afraid to help anybody with anything! As the single mom of a 3 year old, I HAVE TO take my daughter with me everywhere but she NEVER NEVER NEVER leaves my sight! "Stay where I can see you" has been the rule since she was old enough to walk around in public. Even though she knows this rule, I still remind her a million times when we're out somewhere. I'm not saying she won't ever get lost - who knows what might happen someday - but I agree with the other comments saying that people need to watch their own kids!

The Controversy Over 'Busty' Barbie and Our Idolatry of Hookers {BV Black Spin}

May 26th 2010 9:06AM My daughter likes Barbies. Though I really don't care too much for them (I see no real educational value to them) I buy them for her every now & again. The slutty Barbies come in EVERY RACE! Black, Asian, White... & some I'm not even sure what they're supposed to be. Everybody knows that Barbies just look trashy - always have right? I don't worry about their clothes too much because they just come right off. My daughter's 3 so we have naked Barbies everywhere. Oh & those naked Barbies are every race. We're white but she actually has more black Barbies because Tiana is her favorite Disney princess. Anyway, parents need to worry more about parenting their children & teaching them the values & morals they believe in. Stop letting toys & the media raise our children!

GymGirl Ultra Running Skirt Giveaway {That's Fit}

Apr 7th 2010 1:58PM I'm a total bum at the gym! While I'd love to look cute, money's tight so I wear what I've got on hand - old cotton cheer shorts, 2 sports bras(necessary when you've got big girls!), a tank & some comfy shoes. I see girls at the gym working out in their cute matching outfits. I'm a little jealous of their cuteness but hey - at least I'm there sweating my butt of to improve myself.

Everybody Loves Jeff Dunham -- Or Do They? {Inside TV Blog}

Nov 5th 2009 10:15AM I LOVE Jef-ffff Dun-HAM! Comedy isn't meant for people to over-think. It's funny; just laugh. That's part of the whole problem here. His act isn't meant for people to try to figure out the background behind it or what the jokes mean to history & racial issues. It's just funny people! Relax & laugh a little bit - you'll probably find that everything else in the world is a lot easier to deal with if you just laugh every now & then.

Parents Say Pornographic Candy Wrappers Are Not All That Sweet {ParentDish}

Aug 29th 2009 11:14PM Only adults would even realize the sexual aspect of these pictures. To kids, they're just the fruit flavors of the candy. I think the whole shebang's hillarious! This father apparently needs to lick more cherries & ummm... well.... ah yeah some more lemons. lol Looks like the cherries & the lemon are happy so where's the harm? If they're all consenting fruits, I say leave them be.

Breast-Feeding Toy Divides Moms {Lemondrop}

Aug 10th 2009 7:34PM Offended, no... creeped out, yes! Breastfeeding is awesome & I very much support it. I think this doll is just over the top. The daisy nipples, fake sounds, just the whole idea of it. Baby Alive gives me the willies too so this just adds to it. I'll always openly discuss breastfeeding with my daughter but I won't buy her this doll or any other eating, pooping, bodily function toy.

'Sexting' Teenagers Charged With Child Pornography {Switched}

Jan 15th 2009 12:08AM Don't these kids have parents? Where are the parents in this situation? Kids this age are going to do stupid things! Given, when I was younger we didn't text. If you had something you wanted to show off, it was done in person. Does that mean I can go back & press charges against all the boys I flashed in high school? This stuff is just stupid! The girls knew what they were doing when they sent the pics - showing off & being sexy for some boy & the boys knew what they were doing when they opened the message - being teenage boys. How is there any abuse or child porn of anything illegal going on there? It's just kids being kids. Now back to my parents thing... take your kid's phone if they get caught with it at school. What does a 14 year old really need with a cell phone anyway? Have a talk with your daughter! Why on earth is a 14 year old taking provocative pics of herself anyway? Maybe someone needs to have a little birds & bees talk with her, maybe somebody just needs to tell her to stop being a skank before she gets something that medication can't get rid of. Parents these days take no responsibility for their own kids & expect everyone else to raise their kids for them - teachers, media, etc. Your kid only has a many "rights" as you'll give him & it's your job as a parent to be nosey as hell & know what your kid's doing!

'Baby boom' unexpectedly hit the U.S. in 2006 {That's Fit}

Jan 18th 2008 12:47PM Ha! Funny you should mention that. My daughter was born in 07 but I'm sure they baby boom will continue for last year too. My then-hubby came home from overseas & I conceived 2 months later! I'd like to see an article about the military baby boom (& divorce boom for that matter) in the last few years since the war started.
