Cuba ends ban on DVD player, computer sales {Engadget}
Mar 14th 2008 1:16AM "Many Cubans expect the state to soon allow them to buy cellular
telephones. While they will now be able to buy computers, access to
the Internet remains controlled by the government."
actually you can get cell phones and internet but you really have to
have the right connections. some commodities you can buy in stores
with CUCs, such as cell phones, but they are really expensive and as
such, out of reach for most people. even if you can net access the
speeds are incredibly slow. not sure if there is a firewall akin to
china. also a lot of those things mentioned (dvds, computers) are on the black market but maybe now prices will go down?
Nintendo launches TV Guide Channel in Japan, enables Wiimote to control TV {Engadget}
Mar 4th 2008 2:49PM I'm not interested so much in the tech behind how this works so much as to comment on if/how it works in Japan and this Wii channel being made available overseas. I left Japan before cable television was available so I'm not sure how their tv guide system works but it probably looks already like what Wii will provide and Wii's just spitting that out on the Wii interface. There's not that many cable channels anyway, not like USA, so it's probably easier to manage. This guide requires internet access and many still have it on their mobile not in the house or just dial up but if they have cable and use a guide currently, they're probably already good to go. Somehow this Wii channel seems too Japanese culture specific (very big on mobile use, etc) that I don't see it working overseas or not in USA. If the channel made it overseas, would Nintendo not allow certain channels or program details available on the guide because they're not family friendly? Just got a Wii and surprised the news channel is blunter than the games, good call.

Evergreen's Goth Keyboard for "meat-loving people" {Engadget}

Wii Fit hits Japan today, America's still fat {Engadget}
Dec 3rd 2007 12:50AM to find out more about wii fit, just read the official japanese site, if you know japanese that is. but you can still get a sense through pictures. there are 2 main green buttons at the bottom, click on the one on the right (has an image of someone bending and has the number 40 on it). that will show you the training games withing. you can click on each one for details and there's a little icon of the movement you do.

i don't see any game on it that would incorporate jumping, just running. the running is while your wii remote is in your pocket, so i don't see weight on the board as being too much of an issue. the main categories are: balance games, aerobic exercise, yoga, and resistance training.
as for the person who said mcdonald's has been in japan only since 1997, where the hell did you get that date from? or do you live deep in the back woods of japan? i was eating mcd's 10 years before that in japan and it wasn't brand new. reading their japanese site, they've been there since 1971.
