The Minor Threat: Age-Restricted Communities Evicting Children {AOL Real Estate}
Jan 5th 2012 4:34PM Back in 2002, I bought a mobile home for my husband and myself and his adult son in a 55 and older community because my husband was completely disabled and his sister lived in the mobile home nearby. I had purchased the home with money I received from the death of my parents. I then went back to my home state to be with my youngest son who was a high school senior. (My husband was 63 at the time). My step-son moved here with his dad to be his caregiver while I was gone for the year.
After a few years, my husband and step-son moved back to where they used to live and we divorced. A few years later, I and my second husband came down to my mobile home to fix it up and stay for the winter. The homeowner's association told me I could only stay for 30 days because I was not 55 at the time so I was not eligible to "live" in my own home. Boy, try telling me that I can't stay in the home I paid for!
The association's president asked me if I was going to "sell or rent"? I told her to go f__k herself and hired a lawyer who proceeded to blow the homeowner's association out of the park because he found that the park had not properly established their 55-and-over legal requirements. So instead of telling the residents that they could expect to have their dues returned back to them for the last 15 years, my lawyer informed this association that I would not inform the residents about the screw-up and they are to cease and desist their harassment of me and leave me alone. The association left me alone and tried to hire my (competent) lawyer for the park but my lawyer was smart enough to decline.
I just now am 55 years old, finally legal enough. So I have been living in this deed restricted community even though I was under 55 for many years.
So all is not lost, hire a competent lawyer and show the idiot old folks what's what.

Home Inspections: It Pays to Know What You're Buying {AOL Real Estate}
Dec 29th 2010 12:15PM Most articles don't mention it, but home inspectors are not required to be licensed in any state, nor can you sue them for something that might have been overlooked.

My Unemployed Life: The Forgotten Woman {AOL Jobs}
Nov 18th 2010 10:41AM I understand where you are coming from, Molly. I'm in the same boat but I'm older, 55. To the posters who tell you to lower your goals, get a job "cleaning toilets if you have to", they have no clue. No one is hiring anywhere, especially someone my age. To the poster who said to volunteer, you don't get it, do you? In order to volunteer, you have to have money for a car or a phone, etc. Sure, food stamps keeps you alive so you don't starve to death, but one needs shelter, also. People like me who will do anything (legally) for employment, such as clean houses, care for the elderly and/or disabled, aren't making enough money to maintain their homes. Plus, one illness or accident puts our whole lives at risk.
It especially annoys me when I read posters who think because we're on food stamps, that we're lazy, drug users, or low-lifes. So far from the truth but these idiots don't want to know the truth.
As the one poster stated above, employers aren't hiring people who are over-qualified because they know once the economy turns around, these over-qualified people are long gone. I am hoping that is exactly what happens.
Good luck to you and good luck to me.
Thirty Percent of Women Have Been Estranged From Their Moms {Lemondrop}
Nov 5th 2010 7:11PM I'm sorry I read this article and these posts. I didn't realize how many people and their families are so dysfunctional and uneducated/under-educated. I didn't realize what a happy, normal childhood I had and what a close relationship I had with my parents and brothers. I say "had" because they're all deceased now.

Nov 1st 2010 3:28PM First of all, just because someone criticizes people doing "extreme sports" doesn't mean they're sitting in rocking chairs.
Secondly, if one chooses to do risky things, they take the chance that they may die from it. However, not everybody dies from risky behavior. My ex-husband was a motorcycle racer and he wiped out and became a quadraplegic. He was in his early 60's at the time. That left me to care for him completely, having to give up my job and my life. After a year or two, of course we divorced.
For those of you who indulge in risky behavior, remember that it's not only your life that's affected.

Find the Best Cat for You Based On Your Personality Type {Pawnation OLD}
Aug 30th 2010 7:07PM I have owned cats all my life. My last cat died last fall at 17 years of age of heart failure. As I am currently unemployed, the best way I have now to enjoy cats without cost is to be a "foster parent" for my local humane society. Shelters always have need of fosters for their cats and kittens with upper respiratory infections, nursing mother cats, cats who need more socialization, kitties who are too small to be adopted, etc. I get to pick my kitty, cat, or cats and take care of them for several weeks. I take these cats to the shelter's vets for their immunizations or antibiotics and don't have to pay a dime! After I get them healthy, I take them back to the shelter for adoption. The shelter lets me know when one of my "fosters" gets adopted and I get pleasure knowing that I've helped a poor innocent cat get a forever home. The shelter provides me with litter, food, medicine, scratch posts or anything I need. I enjoy this very much. It's like they're my "grandkitties." It's a win/win situation. I get my "kitty fix" and they get healthy and placed in good homes. All without me spending a dime. I love it. I think I will be doing this for the rest of my life.
