Curt, "Back when marriages lasted" is a joke. The only reason they "lasted" was:
1) It was HARD to get a legal divorce. You had to go to Reno or Mexico in some cases.
2) Women HAD to stay with the man no matter how abusive because she often wouldn't be able to find a job that would support her and the kids or in some states own property, get credit, open a bank account, etc.
3) Society treated a divorced male like a failure, a divorced female like a wh**e, and both as though they were sinners who should burn on earth before they went to hell. The man would have problems at work with the boss (divorced, eh? must have some kind of character flaw), women would have a hard time re-marrying (damaged and used goods), their churches would shun them, etc.
Many couples stayed together just for the simple economic reasons. The man would pay alimony and child support that would leave him busted, and the woman had to stay because she was trained as nothing more than baby maker.
While I agree that our current society treats divorce the same way as breaking up with a Jr. High sweetheart, I don't agree that the "sanctity" of marriage was any better in the good old days.
