In honor of National Coming Out Day 2010, we bring you this news: ABC Family is taking the gay bashing issue head on by turning one of the year's rare stories that actually had a happy ending into a made-for-TV movie. Earlier this year, we introduced you to Constance McMillen, the teen lesbian who wanted to go to prom in a tux with her girlfriend on her arm, but instead was subjected to dirty looks, a canceled prom and even an invite to an alternative, but fake, prom.
The teen LGBT activist challenged the Itawamba County school district with the backing of the ACLU as well as many celebs, including ex-N*SYNC-er Lance Bass, Ellen DeGeneres and Green Day. Not only did she win a settlement of $35,000, McMillen also had the opportunity to go to a "Second Chance" prom.
Openly gay producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who are known for producing "Hairspray," "Chicago" and "The Bucket List," are teaming up with Sony Pictures TV for this currently untitled film. The team has enlisted "Ghost Whisperer" creator and exec producer John Gray to pen the script and direct, according to Deadline.
With the fight against bullying, hopefully this movie will push the message even further.
Behind on all the "Anti-Bully" legislation in the news? Never fear -- we've got you covered. (Parentdish)
