Your roommate's weight can affect you If you're a college gal trying to avoid the Freshman 15, a recent study may have found you a solution: Cross your fingers and hope you're paired with an overweight roomie.

According to a study conducted by the University of Michigan, college girls who were randomly assigned to spend the academic year with an overweight person gained less weight than those who were paired with students of average weight.

The researchers think this is probably because overweight girls tend to watch what they eat more, and, in accordance, keep fewer pyramids of Ramen on hand, purchase more modest meal plans and generally try to restrict their access to food. In other words, you'll eat fewer cookies if your roommate is yelling at her mom to quit sending shoe boxes of them from home. (We have done this. We miss you too, Ma, but oh my God, our cholesterol.)

The study also emphasized that these results were based on people who were randomly paired to live together, not on people who chose to live together. So, all you can do is hope for the best, or just be frosty enough with a metabolically gifted roommate that she won't offer to go halfsies on midnight pizza.
