Our friend, comedian Jared Logan, has a bit where he says, "Watching commercial for girls' toys, it's like feminism never happened."And judging from this horrific collection found over at Huffington Post, he's right. Buckle up, ladies -- if you thought the Easy Bake Oven was bad, you're about to be blown away.
For example, take the Pole Dancer doll (left)! Isn't she gorgeous? Don't you want to be just like her? Or how about the Disney Princesses' Broom and Dustpan, for sweeping up all your dreams of finding Mr. Right?
Or, if you're less about cleaning and more about making a statement, then why not try the Tramp Stamp Machine found at Toys R Us? (Seriously.) Only fifty cents -- low self-esteem comes free!

It's frustrating enough when toys for girls deal in gender stereotypes like housekeeping, as in the actual toy "My Cleaning Trolley" (from Girls Only, right). But it's downright disgusting when they teach little girls to have a negative body image (see: the girl-tech "photo retouch" studio that lets them magic away their physical imperfections) or, even worse, sexualizes them (see: the Bratz "Babyz" line).
While some of this is just funny (Pole Dancer -- really?), at the end of the day, they're more than a little disturbing. It seems that no matter how far we go in teaching young girls that they can do anything, some insane manufacturer finds a totally nonsensical way to tell them that they should stick to stripping and mopping.

"some insane manufacturer finds a totally nonsensical way to tell them that they should stick to stripping and mopping."
After all, every guy is looking for a naked chick who can swing a mop.

Parents do not have to buy these toys for their daughters. I for one never had any of the toys mentioned above and neither have my 6 and 9 year old sisters. If parents don't buy them for their children they will slowly start to disappear just like any other out of style toy.

The writer must not have any children. If s/he did, they would quickly realize that children are their gender. You can try to make everyone as unisex as possible, but it is what messes them up. Girls will choose girls toys and boys will choose boys toys. However, the pole dancer is disturbing... I am so sick of these femi-nazis making EVERYTHING an issue. Feminists are the reason why women are not treated well by men anymore. I don't want to be their equal, I want to be treated better than them.

You are 100% correct.

Are you insane? You want to go back to chiverley when women were considered too weak and too stupid to take care of themselves? And no, boys and girls will play with what they are told to play with. Why do you hate your fellow women and all they have tried to give to you? Maybe you want to go back to a time without all the hassle of having to think for yourself or work to achieve something in your life. If you want to be barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen, that is fine, but don't you dare for that on me or my children.

Oh really? I am female and I loved playing with cars and trucks. And running around and getting dirty and all that "boy" stuff. Children are PEOPLE first and foremost. Why try and stick them with antiquated gender roles?

You want to be pampered, not treated better. You're one of the women who don't like that feminism asks for female accountability, that suddenly your intelligence and ambition are called into question and makes you feel insecure. You don't want to threaten men, you want to be adored for what you don't have to work for. As the eldest of four daughters who owned everything from Barbies to telescopes, my parents encouraged all of us to pursue our interests. None of us turned out Stepford wives. Neuroscience has NOT proved ANY of the differences alleged between the genders, from the good - women have a genetic advantage for multitasking - to the bad - women are less capable of spatial reasoning. (Why not consider other cultures who recognized more than binary categories of gender?)
You'd think these absurd offerings of kiddie toys would prove how influential social conditioning is...

So, you're good with this? If not what's your point? By the way, most men treat women just fine.

While pole dancer doll there is an issue, I would buy the cleaning toy for my daughter because she likes to sweep the floor. She is always stealing the broom and trying to help me when I'm sweeping. And I don't want to hear anything about that being a stereotype because she got a set of play tools for Christmas that she plays with just as often. Feminism is about being allowed to do any job you want as a woman, Not making a woman feel wrong for wanting to be a housewife if its what she has chosen.

Absolutely, Allie!! Good post! I am about to turn 50 - my favorite toys growing up were Baby Secret... and the army men my mom bought me... I don't think it's about turning kids "unisex"... not this particular article, anyway... it's about the horrible choices out there for girls' toys. I don't have a problem with the Cleaning Trolley either - if my daughter wanted it, I wouldn't have an issue with buying it for her. The Pole Dancing one, or the Tramp Stamp machine... hmmm... that's another matter. I do agree with the earlier post - if parents don't buy these toys, they will fade into obscurity... c'mon folks, if you have children, please be parents!

you are missing the point Allie, these toys are ONLY marketed to girls. If it was a "my first cleaning trolly for boys and girls" that would be something different. Where is the one for boys who like to help mommy clean up?

You are missing the point a bit. If there was a similar toy for boys then it wouldn't be so bad. But this is ONLY marketed to girls and that is a bit disturbing

"Unisex" isn't uniformity. Why is it so difficult to understand removing these arbitrary social constraints allows every child to realize their individuality? Also, it should be pointed out feminism doesn't mandate that every choice a woman makes is automatically empowering - it just allows for the freedom of choice.

Oh, get over yourself. My grand daughter plays with my vaccum as much as the grand son does. I bet my grandson would love the trolley. He LOVES his trucks, and she loves her dollies. They want what they want...just follow one around the toy store, and you will see. I can't keep the kids out of my stuff...all of it. (altho I think the pole dancer is deplorable, I used to want the Trailer Trash Barbie when it came out...but was quickly yanked by Mattel!)

That's why I'll never have a daughter, if all they wana do all day is strip and clean. I want a daughter that goes to grad school and do what men do. I guess all boys for me then.

Actually, society and culture do much in shaping the roles of boys and girls. Take for instance the little girl who wants to be like her mother (if she is traditional) and starts to sweep the floor. Now, what would that little girl do if her mother instead of the traditional role was spending her time maintaining the car? Would not the little girl want to work on cars like her mother? All you traditionists like to think that boys will be boys and girls will be girls, but from the moment we adults know the sex of the baby, we start the gender seperation and we teach our children how to behave like boys or girls.
