Elaine Benes copycats: now appearing at an American Apparel near you?

According to the Internet, the "Seinfeld" character's signature long, shapeless, flowery, calico dresses and white socks with maryjanes are purportedly sprouting in hipster dens like New York's Williamsburg neighborhood and Los Angeles's Silver Lake. The look is being applauded for a return to modesty and comfort. Personally, we think it's just a bit of this summer's floral trend commingling with that disturbing "Let's resurrect Doc Martens" ridiculousness that crops up every couple years or so. Also, Julia Louis-Dreyfus mostly favored the "loose and flowy" look on "Seinfeld" when she was disguising a pregnancy. It's not like we're all wearing power suits and bouffants, is it? IS IT?

As for whether or not this look is going to take flight nationwide? Unlikely. The heartland and the Bible Belt tend to sensibly ignore most hipster-enclave trends in favor of emulating other '90s shows, like "Dawson's Creek"'s jean-shorts/A.E.-tank-top look.

Besides, the Elaine look is more than slightly matronly, and we doubt that we're collectively ready as a society to re-embrace big, elaborately curly hair adorned with delicate Mary Todd Lincoln earrings. We're not even sure "Seinfeld" is funny anymore. Have you watched it recently in syndication at like 3 a.m.? This was the show whose ending Americans treated like the death of a head of state?

Well, if 1995 is back, so be it. We're off to unpack buy scrunchies, blackberry lipstick and thick socks.
