When Kirsten Ott and Maria Palladino decided to take the leap and get married, the bride and "broom" -- a gender-neutral wedding-y term Palladino took on -- they were beyond excited to plan their perfect wedding day.

But when they started flipping through the multitude of bridal glossies, they didn't see a single couple that resembled them staring back.

"There are tons of wedding magazines when you go into a wedding section at a bookstore," Ott told CNN.com. "But we weren't in any of them. Not one single gay couple. It was disheartening."

That's when Equally Wed was born.

Not only will the online magazine help couples find gay-friendly reception venues, it will also feature actual ceremonies to get the brainstorming started. "We do the work for you, calling or visiting these locations and talking to the owners about how open they are to same-sex couples," Ott said.

Currently, same-sex marriage is legal in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Washington, D.C.; New Jersey allows civil unions.

As for registries, Crate and Barrel, who just named a gay couple second-place winners in their Ultimate Wedding contest, is equal-opportunity when it comes to throw pillows and gravy boats.
