Guess what? Sometimes the drugstore makeup that you read fantastic reviews of in fashion magazines actually sucks and the writer raving about it didn't love it at all -- or even try it!
It's on that magazine page because it's a new launch from the company who "bought" the back cover, being endorsed by the actress with the symmetrical face and the squeaky-clean reputation.
(FACT: Beauty companies rarely go with an edgy spokeswoman no matter how huge her celebrity, because it hurts the brand when she's inevitably photographed looking puffy and hung over with a cigarette in her mouth, then ridiculed accordingly by Perez Hilton.)
In a recent past life, I was one of those magazine editors.
Sometimes I lied. That cheap, crappy, pressed powder wasn't "instantly transformative" or "an absolute makeup-bag essential" like I claimed; in truth, it smelled like crayons. I am seriously, seriously sorry. And this is why you need to take your beauty tips not from the glossies, but from us truth-telling bloggers.
But at least now I get to disclose the drugstore makeup I really, actually love -- the stuff I use every day and know to be outstanding. I may never work in publishing again, but you'll look pretty, and I owe you one. Trust me.
Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Inspired by Carmindy All-Over Brightener Concealer
I didn't know what the hell this was all about when I first tried it -- a lavender-ish pink cream that you wear on your dark circles? What? But it WORKS. And it's $2! I dab it on under my regular, flesh-toned undereye concealer, and it makes a HUGE difference. One warning: It is easy to go overboard with this product because it's so lovable, and then the effect is very pink-eyed lab rabbit. Don't do that. Just dab it on with, say, your ring finger. The instructions also say to use it OVER your undereye concealer, which I disagree with, despite knowing Carmindy is one hell of a makeup artist. But that's because I'm all Sid Vicious and do it MY WAY.Maybelline New York Pulse Perfection Vibrating Mascara in Blackest Black
I was using a $30 French beauté-esque mascara religiously until this one came out, and then I was converted forever. It's inky-dark and super-lengthening, it vibrates ("oscillates," in less sexy beauty-copy-speak), it makes your eyes look Bambi huge, and it is AWESOME. Every person I've recommended it to winds up a convert. My technique, designed to negate the need for an eyelash curler: Hold it at the base of your lashes, let it pulse there for a second -- this lets the mascara build up a little, which makes your lashes look thicker -- and then swoop it out, more or less horizontally, as in more toward your ear than toward your mirror. Then keep layering. You can use it all day and night and it just keeps looking better. I keep one in every handbag, so I have like nine. Wet n' Wild MegaGlo Illuminating Powder in Catwalk Pink
Let me begin by saying I am a huge, HUGE fan of Wet n' Wild, even though Googling them always gives me porny results and a few water parks. Always go check their stuff out at CVS or wherever. Okay, so here's my deal with this: My natural skin tone is meh (as opposed to, say, radiant), so I will load on anything that promises to "illuminate" me like until I look like a glittery little Olympic gymnast. The amazing thing about this particular bronzer/highlighter powder is that no matter how much I apply (with a massively fluffy brush), and though it technically has a little shimmer to it, it does not make me shimmery whatsoever -- it makes me GLOW. And "glow" is the goal. (Another FACT: You might think you want to shimmer, but you probably don't. It's very "Bad Girls Club: Miami." But no judgment!)Prestige Cosmetics Total Intensity Eyeliner in Deepest Black
Ummm, OK. Best. Eyeliner. Ever. Even though the name of the brand has always reminded me of a goofy gentlemen's club (I know, I know; I'm weird), and you may have never even heard of it, Prestige makes the most killer eye pencils possible. Yeah, I know what brand of black eyeliner you use. I used to use that one too. This one, I think, is better. And it's $5.50! This eyeliner is designed to go on intensely BLACK-black and doesn't smudge unless you want it to; and then -- if, like me, you do choose to smudge the line out (particularly pretty at the outer corners and under the lower lashes, I always say) -- it gets smoky-pretty exactly like it should. it's also an amazing pencil for the slimy-but-sensitive inner rims of your eyes, which I know a lot of people are scared of lining: it's soft and just greasy enough to be gentle, and the color stays there.Revlon Just Bitten Stain + Balm in Passion
Let me just say this: a lip stain on one end and a lip balm on the other. A lip stain on one end and a lip balm on the other! $9! Genius! How can you even resist that? The stain part is a really easy-to-use, felt-tipped little wonder which you can also use to frantically scribble down your online bill-payment confirmation number from Time Warner (not that that just happened). On the other side, a sheer, creamy balm that's as hydrating as anything you'd wear to go skiing (do people still go skiing? I'm out of it.) that somehow manages to be hugely curative for chapped lips and totally glossy and lovely at the same time. I wear this bright pink shade, Passion (I mean, I will say that beauty company names are getting old, but anyway) because I personally happen to be a washed-out blond that the shade flatters; YOU choose the shade you know to look good on you. One of these babies lasts like four months, and we all live happily ever after. Now it's your turn to nominate the best drugstore makeup -- in the comments section!
Cat Marnell was a beauty editor at a big-name magazine before becoming a blogger, though it is now officially doubtful that she will ever be one again. Luckily, she already owns unimaginable amounts of makeup.

Lets talk mascaras. The best one I've used for coverage is Maybelline's Full & Soft, for length you can't beat Avon's Super Extend mascara. Both in black & Waterproof.
The best skin care line is definately Avon's 'Anew' line. There is a product for every age group & skin situation.

Sorry folks...but I very rarely ever use makeup...and at 66, I have very few and very fine wrinkles...almost non-existent. Same with shaving my legs. I did it ONCE as a teenager and saw how course and ugly looking it was when it started to grow back in that I never did it again. Now, you have to take a magnifying glass to see any hair on my legs. It is all but non-existent.
We are led to believe that we 'must' spend exuberant amounts of money on makeup ...and shavers...in order to look like fashionistas.
I've had two husbands in my life...both of them very handsome. I didn't 'catch' them with all this crazy makeup and spending hours in the bathroom shaving my legs. Also, at 66; (So, I'm told anyhow) that I look a whole lot younger than my true age. Of course, I keep busy...don't smoke or drink alcoholic beverages and simply try to live a clean life. Also, I don't eat very many foods that are saturated in fats. I do have a bit of a 'sweet tooth' though. I guess between that and a certain medication that I take helps to put a bit more weight on me than I care to have though.
Anyhow, all I'm trying to get at is simply to be yourself. You don't need a ton of makeup or go to the beauty parlor every week to look nice. Just try to eat right, exercise a bit, stay clean and be a kind and loving person. That's the secret to 'true beauty'.

If you have an Aldi grocery store in your area, they carry a line of skin care and makeup that is made in Germany. I haven't tried the make up, but the skin care products are great. I use the cleanser, the face cream and the undereye cream. The eye cream is awesome....when you put it on, you can feel it firms your skin. I would take a bath in it if I could...just love it! And the best part is all of these products are very inexpnsive....less than $4.00 each. I am a FAN! ;)

Men, and the world in general, would be better off if women used more vanishing cream.

If you have an Ulta store near you (or they have an online store) check their Ulta brand of mineral makeup and concealers. They are made in the USA, and have a creamier feel than Bare Minerals. Not to mention they cost a LOT LESS. I like the Ulta brand a ton better and I used Bare Minerals for YEARS.

Avon's .mark line makes a lip stain which is outstanding. Goes on pretty smoothly for a stain and lasts. Doesn't come in a huge array of shades but the colours they offer are fairly universal. Not sure what the price is these days but I think it's hovering around $5 - $7.

Sure wish this gal (who now claims to be HONEST...) would try herself, or have someone else try scar revision products, and tell us if they really work and how. (Affects while using)
I think it would be awesome IF someone were truly HONEST about skin care products, and posted the TRUTH.

People are celebity only when the public gives up their power to choose to the media. In truth, the media mogals are no more inteligent than we. We fail to educate ourselves, taking the easy road - rather than the responsiblity and priviledge to form our personal level of celebrity - In relaity we are each an equal treasure as the one we choose to deify.

Via Bzzagent, I've recently been given 3 products to sample that I now just love. First of all, I've tried concealers from Lancome and Prescriptives on down. I've been using two from the CoverGirl & Olay Simply Ageless line that work very well. The "corrector" adheres enough to stay with me all day, unlike the others that disappear the minute you move your hand past your face. This Corrector covers an "age spot" and some redness very well and stays put. Plus the lighter CG/O eye concealer has a swirl of "illuminator" or serum in it that helps to brighten your eyes.
I thought I had sworn off the newer "plastic brushes" that many new mascaras feature after one I'd tried from Prescriptives started to fail after 2-3 uses. The little plastic teeth started falling out and making application a pain and also clumpy, so I then had to separate the lashes. I was dubious when Bzzagent offered me CoverGirl LashblastFusion (purple tube) to test. On days I'm making up in a hurry, one swipe of LashBlastFusion gives very nice coverage and length. And when I want more volume and length, I apply more coats and they don't clump! Hooray. Anyway, that's what I like.
As for the large pores (which I've had since puberty and am now 54), try getting facials and allow the esthetician to do extractions. I always resisted the extractions until one of my estheticians told me they would help pores look smaller. She was right. I try to get a facial about once every 5-6 weeks (go to a school if you need to find a facial that's less pricey)

Bare Minerals is the BEST foundation! I can't stand liquid foundation since I started using this stuff. I buy it at Ulta for $25 and it has lasted me for over a year now....so it's definitely worth the money!

Hi, I have some scars on my face left from surgery for removal of pre-cancerous cells.
I need help finding the right cover up make up to neutralize the red areas and then covering them up with a good scar concealer that looks natural.
I'm currently using clinique foundation.. It's just ok. It doesn't neautralize the red and it doesn't last all day.
I'm hoping there is something out there for me. I'm very self conscience of my scars and would like to feel pretty.

Amy:
I've been having a problem with hives lately. They go away in a day or two, but leave these unsightly, dark red circles for weeks after. Avon Anew Age-Transforming Foundation provides a heavier coverage which reflects the light resulting in a more youthful and less "made-up" appearance. Just add an extra touch of Magix Concealer after your foundation has "set" to totally cover the red. The key is getting the right shade because in the summer because our skintone changes often as we tan. I hope this helps. :-)

I have to say, the best and most underrated drugstore product is probably covergirl's tinted moisturizer. Oldie, but goodie. Especially at around $6-$7, no other drugstore brand makes a decent one. It's so light and easily absorbed, just enough for the dry patches I get on my cheeks. Leaves a really subtle, healthy-looking glow, and it's oil-free! Always a plus.

I have an extra requirement--that the company does not test on animals. So most of the choices listed wouldn't work for me. I use Revlon for eyeliner and am pleased with it. And MAC for foundation, concealer, blush, and lipstick, although I will stray to Revlon for lipstick once in a while.
