If anyone knows weddings, it's Donnie Brown, host of Style Network's "Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?" (now in its 11th successful season) and author of "Donnie Brown Weddings: From the Couture to the Cake."What most people don't know about Donnie is that the Dallas-born wedding planner is just a bit of a Clinton fan. (In fact, he once stalked out of a dinner party at which someone was slagging Bill.)
"I would have died to be invited -- it's the wedding of the year!" he gushed to Lemondrop. But, since he didn't have to carefully match his tie to the invite, instead he's been studying up on every last detail of what Chelsea's Big Day will look like, from the flowers, to the tent, to the $15,000 port-a-potties.
Should you care? It's already been confirmed that Melsea will be serving vegan food, which kind of rains on the idea that this will be any real party. And, like Donnie -- and Barack Obama -- we, too, are Little People who didn't make the list.
But it's always fun to gawk at crazy new wedding trends. And, after the jump, Donnie shares nine new, over-the-top ideas Chelsea's wedding is sure to launch. We guarantee these are going to set the bar for brides-to-be until Brangelina takes the plunge.
Trend #1: Taj Mahal TentsForget what you knew about a stake and four poles. Chelsea is about to set a new standard. Her tent, says Donnie, "is being custom-created with glass walls." It costs $600,000 and will be the new ne plus ultra. "It includes flooring and climate control," he says. "There's no way Bill Clinton is going to be in there sweating!"
Trend #2: Uber-ToiletsWell-clad backsides, meet the Presidential Series Luxury Washrooms. "They're bringing in three: one for service personnel, one for men and one for women," confides Donnie. The loos, from Room to Go, Inc., come complete with skylights, marble countertops and multiple stalls -- for around $15,000.
Trend # 3: Nonstop foodAfter this, guests may expect to nosh throughout the night! Picture carving stations during cocktail hour, special orders at dinner and -- the latest celebrity craze -- "normal people" midnight snacks. Think burgers and fries -- made special with Kobe beef and sweet potatoes -- and washed down with miniature shake shots.
Trend #4: Your Own Logo"You have to brand your wedding now," says Donnie, "just like a magazine or website would." A logo, he says, you can use everywhere, from the invites to the desserts. But it doesn't end there: "Then there's a light logo, that shines wherever you want it to be," he says. "We shine it right on the dance floor from the ceiling. It's stunning."
Trend #5: Mood LightingLED lighting, says Donnie, will transition a room from one color to another during the course of the event. "That's the beauty of doing the whites and ivories in the flowers," he says. "You can literally change the color of the room with the push of a button." But don't think disco: "They may go from an ivory light to a light pink and transition very slowly," he says.
Trend #6: Square (and Round and Rectangular) TablesThink: Anthropologie. "It's become very popular now to do a mix of different table types," says Donnie. "It makes the room more interesting, and you can get more creative with the centerpieces and the decor."
Trend #7: Custom Linens / Bespoke Aisle RunnersHigh-end wedding planners are seeing more custom-made linens these days, says Donnie. "Silks and satins with organza overlays. I have a feeling about her aisle runner, and I have a feeling it will be silk, hand-painted with their personal logo."
Trend #8: Keepsake FavorsForget candied almonds, or last year's favorite lower-brow trend, lotto tickets. At least for royal-ish weddings, we're trending toward "keepsake favors." "Something from Tiffany's, silver or crystal, and engraved," says Donnie, "that will be a keepsake that will be kept in families forever."
Trend #9: The Big RevealRead: More special effects than a James Cameron vehicle. "They'll unveil one component after another to keep surprising their guests," says Donnie. "That will move them, piece by piece, through this drama, until they get to the reception. I've been a Clinton fan for years," he says. "I wish I could be there."
We do too, Donnie. We do too.
New episodes of "Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?" air on Saturdays at 9 p.m. EST on The Style Network. You can follow Donnie on Twitter.
