You may think you're doing your feet a favor by slipping on a pair of flip-flops, but it turns out the ubiquitous summer sandals are more perilous than they appear. In the U.K. alone, the National Health Service spends the equivalent of $62 million a year treating injuries, falls and long-term problems caused by the footwear, with over 200,000 people seeking medical treatment as a result of wearing the shoes.
Who knew getting flat-tired could be so dangerous?
Who knew getting flat-tired could be so dangerous?
Here comes the science: We walk differently in flip-flops than we do barefoot or in regular shoes. The pressure goes on the outside of the foot instead of the heel. Injuries from flip-flops range from everyday discomforts like lingering muscle and joint pain to shin splints and sprained/broken ankles and toes. Also -- embarrassing! -- fractured wrists and arms as the result of a nosedive.
In fact, doctors say flip-flops are just as bad for your hooves as stilettos, but actually cause more damage because they're worn for longer periods of time. Considering one in five women owns at least one pair of flip-flops, and 15 million people wear them per day in the summer, podiatrists must be enjoying the summer months even more than the rest of us.
And we thought the only damage from flip-flops involved scrubbing a day's worth of sidewalk grease off our feet every night.

I am a male and don't wear flip flops or sandals.
I think if girls would just becareful as they wear them, everything would be alright without any accidents. You girls look so sexy and femine wearing flip flops. Just becareful what you girls buy. Don't buy anything cheap like from a Dollar Store, any 99 cent store, or clearance outlet department store and get injured. There is nothing so beautiful than to see girls wearing pretty flip flops with nice pedicures.
The female foot is a beautiful piece of art and needs to be taken care of, kept up daily, and not getting injured with a sprained or broken ankle, broken toes, or any other type of accident.
Becareful girls, take care of yourself and your beautiful feet.

This article is true..my doctor says most people have knee and leg problems later on..she recommends the one that has the loop for the big toe if you were flip flops to catch your foot from sliding forward.

I agree with the article. I AM one of these "flip-flop" victims. My first incident I ended up with a bone spur in my heel along the edge of my foot. I had to do a very painful shot twice. But, I was better after that. My second time was far worse. I sprain my ankle badly and tore the ligament and tendons down there. I was at a pool party walking when someone behind me stepped on me. As, I was in mid step, they stepped on my flipflop, in turn it held my foot to the shoe, but my ankle rolled and I went over the side and into the pool. Damage done. Cast on for 8 weeks, Not 6 because tendons and ligaments take longer to heal IF you dont need surgery. I was fortunate that I heeled right and did not need surgery. I stil lwear them and love them .But, Ihear about it anytime I'm doing so and make a visit to the doctor. Sigh. To each his/her own I suppose.

i've never had any problem's with flipflops. i'm assuming i generally don't change how i walk in them either, since all my flipflops have a huge dent and lots of wear on the heels from me keeping my wieght there. the same goes with my sister and my cousin. my mom walks in them funny though, she has more "toe" dents and ball of the foot dents on hers, maybe me and my sister and cousin are wearing the flip flops right because we're all dancers and are always keeping how we move in check, and my mom wears them wrong because she just doesn't keep her center of balance without thinking about it. i do have yet to see a dancer have problems with flipflops.....

"Well I go to church to worship God, not worry about whether or not you like the fact that I am wearing flip flops. I suggest you spend more time looking at the preacher, the hymnal, and your Bible, and less time looking at everyone else's feet."
You know, there was a time people dressed respectfully while attending a house of worship, especially in the summer...not wearing what ever they could throw on so they can run out after Church to the zoo, beach, vollyball game....I really don't think people should be in church wearing short shorts, tank tops with their boobs hanging out, and men with shorts as well, with loose tanks showing their hairy arms and backs...sometimes they smell like they already were out playing sports and popped in to Church. Yuck!

I never did learn how to wear flip-flops. There is just not enough shoe for me. Sandals, yes. And even those I do not wear constanly. I think a shoe with some support should be worn most of the time. I think flip-flops can be dangerous. The young man that cuts my grass wears flip-flops when he's mowing. Worries me to death.

stupid article. what about heels? long skirts? scarves? dangling necklaces? all those can be just as dangerous as the lowly flip flop. besides, every shoe made changes the way you walk. humans were not meant to walk heel to toe. watch any toddler walk barefoot and you'll see. shoes are unnatural, just like apparel. so shut up, i'm keeping my flip flops. thank you.

Absolutely amazing! I too have a variety of flips in many colors and so far so good. But I will consider and look for the things that others have had medical problems with. Thank you for sharing your experience. I'll know what to do if the time comes. However, I can not part with them today. I have had more foot problems with many other types and brands of shoes that I do not encounter with my flips. I no longer have aching, throbbing bunyons nor do I get corns anymore. Both of which make me want to cut my foot off. I would prefer going barefoot EVERYWHERE!!!! Even church!! Especially church! The only reason I wear shoes at all is because the concrete gets too hot! And for some of the more critically challenged....I really don't believe that the loving God that I am coming to love cares about whether or not I am wearing the "right" shoe. HE just wants me to come. There are plenty of people who won't go to church because of attitudes such as ones expressed above. I would know because I've been one of them. But I am grateful that GOD can meet me right where I am. And HE has done just that because HE loves me and I was willing to accept HIM the best way I could at the time. I was wearing camo wedges that day. I was lying face down on a stinky blue mat in a jail cell on Mothers Day praying for GOD to just please save me because me and everything I knew had become dead and empty, while the will to even live was gone. Now....do you think HE cared about where I was physically and the type of stupid shoe i had on? Or do you think HE was more concerned about me and the relationship HE offers to each and every one of us? If the answer isn't obvious to you...well then...I feel for you. Also, I can't wait to get a toe ring (that I have wanted for a while now) to go with my pretty flower tattoo (on my ankle), and toe nail polish (that may or may not coordinate) with my flip-flops. I so should have been a hippie!!!!!

wtf? i would think stilettos are much worse for your feet than anything else. while i agree you shouldn't wear flops all the time, this article greatly exaggerates. only if something heavy were to fall on your feet it will be painful that's true if you wear an open toed shoe. which alf of them usually are, last time i checked in a shoe store.

I transported a flip flop injury when I was working as an EMT! An elderly woman wearing flip flops was washing her car and slipped in the car wash bay. She fell and hit her head.
So, now I don't wear flip flops....to the car wash.

This message is for you...
I love to wear flip flops and wear them everywhere. I'm glad that you have beautiful feet and so do I, in fact, they are probably way more feminine than I expected. I do contribute to this by getting regular pedicures and the ffs that I wear are mostly for women- Ugg Tasminas, and these cute black & pink ones. They just go with everything and I love the way they look- yes I'm straight! I just have a love for flip flops, specifically women's shoes, and have the feet to go with it. I'm sure you'd be happy to see my feet in those flip flops.
Message me!!!
