Apparently the Vietnamese prime minister is totally unfamiliar with the concept of a registry and gave soon-to-be bride Chelsea Clinton some beaded artwork. But not just any beaded artwork.
The picture is hand-beaded, made of semi-precious stones, and is based on a photo from a visit Chelsea and her mom made to the country a couple of years ago.
And here she thought she wanted a new spice rack. Our eyes will never be the same. (Star Tribune)

Shame on you Emerald Catron. That's no way to talk about a GIFT. Are you a Father? Did you ever recieve a horrible tie from your children? This gift was made for the Clintons and you should not be criticizing it! What has happened to Americans that we should be so ungrateful. It's a lovely gift, made with honor and devotion and one I'm certain the reciever with cherish for the rest of her life. How dare you!!

Cultural Differences...hand beaded=took a long time to make...picture=memory of a pleasant occurance...semi-precious stones=display of being worthy friend. There are differences in culture. I have to admit, I don't have the appreciation for Asian/Oriental art. Don't know why.
But, it was a nice gesture (sp?) And she isn't likely to get a duplicate.
(Actually, to me it's along the lines of the velvet clowns/Elvises of the 60's, but what do I know?? :)

I think the gift is wonderful. Even if it is not accepted as a "wedding gift," it should be treasured. As an artist, I am impressed with the likeness.

Wow.....I would have loved to have received this as a wedding gift. I think it is beautiful and appreciate the thought (and talent) that went into it.

It's an interesting and unique gift. The only thing "tacky" is the author's small-mindedness.

It trumps a bunch of useless CDs and an IPOD for a queen. Now we can talk tacky. It was thoughtful and meant to be a special memento. I would say thank you.

The picture IS NOT a tacky gift. It is done with much thought and IS a PRICELESS TREASURE that is sure to be cherished. It is an unusual and one of a kind piece of artwork that collectors will fight for later on in years. Whether you like the content or not (which I do) is immaterial to the craftsmanship and items making up the picture. A true piece of artistry for sure. Wherever the tacky came from makes me wonder what kind of person thought that. Apparently the comment was done without much thought and itself is rather "tacky".

I think Catron has had too much Patron. I was in Vietnam and found the vast majority to be a very gracious and giving people anxious to share their culture. It's too bad the prime minister will have to view the uncultured comments of a few demented Americans. Mr. Prime Minister please accept my sincere apologies for the thoughtless comments of the few and know that rational Americans do not share the negative views and comments shared on this article. Sometimes I wish we were in the Old West when people had the manners to recognize the importance of the term---"Do not look a gift horse in the mouth"

The author of this article has just made an enormous faux pas. I don't know how a gift sent to Chelsea Clinton was made available for public ridicule, but I hope that the Clintons will be incensed to read this mockery of a gift that was made in the sincere belief that it would be welcomed in the spirit in which it was created and given. That he or she was apparently wrong is a matter of cultural taste, but certainly NOT a matter of lack of sincere best wishes and honor. It is no doubt valuable and beautiful in the eyes of the giver, and perhaps the recipient, as well. Is it only Emerald Catron whose taste (at least in what to say and mock) is so off?

Your comments on the wedding gift to Chelsea and her groom, I think was most tacky. The Prime Minister was giving what was felt to be a work of art and I hope they take it as just that. Are you money hungry or what????

I think this is a wonderful work of art....a Treasure!
Maybe not everyone understands that Treasures are not just material things....
Memories count, too!!
Good for Chelsea!

I woner if the Prime Minister will read this very unethical article. How do we ever expect to gain back our American respect if we have people such as the author of this article writing their own personal opinions in a low-grade manner. What you wrote sir/ma'am is very TACKY. Perhaps in Vietnam a gift such as the one presented to Chelsa is a tradition. Of course we are not Vietnam, we are America, but does that give us the right to change traditions of other countries? Hardly!! Since we have muslims in our country wearing their traditional garbs and Hispanics driving drunk as their traditional habits. Print something worth reading. I personally think the gift is very nice and probably worth a lot of money since it is inlaid with precious stones. Of course, again in my own opinion, the subjects could have been different...more respected and easier to look at. 'Nuff said.

What's TAcky is not the photo or the artwork; but the fact that the Clinton's even accept a gift from a Communist country that has violated the 1973 Paris Peace treaty with the US by occupying The Republic of South Vietnam and "re-educating" 50% of their citizens. They also kept 1/3rd of our live POW/MIA's from the Vietnam war and let them die in their gulags and/or the Chinese and Russian gulags. I suggest that the Clinton's cap off the wedding by having Hanoi Jane as a guest of honor and/or a bridesmaid at the wedding!
