Apparently the Vietnamese prime minister is totally unfamiliar with the concept of a registry and gave soon-to-be bride Chelsea Clinton some beaded artwork. But not just any beaded artwork.
The picture is hand-beaded, made of semi-precious stones, and is based on a photo from a visit Chelsea and her mom made to the country a couple of years ago.
And here she thought she wanted a new spice rack. Our eyes will never be the same. (Star Tribune)

The author of this article is a moron. Won't know a work of art, a precious gift made with honorable intentions, if was given tot he author wrapped in a Macy's bag! A little international cultural appreciation is in order here.

I totally agree with you Rilke...I think that is a very thoughtful gift for Chelsea as well...Emerald obviously lacked brain food when he wrote this article....

RIGHT! My thoughts exactly when I read the article, then I saw YOUR post. What right does this author have to judge the tackiness or classiness of someone's wedding gift. Maybe it isn't just what she wanted but I am sure Chelsea is gracious enough to accept it with the good wishes it represented.
I think even to commented upon ia gift is TAAACKY.

I agree. To call this tacky says all I need to know about the author of the piece. I guess a gift certificate from Target would have been better in Emerald Caltron's eyes.

The artistry is really outstanding however, it does look like something that would be more appreciated by Hillary than Chelsea (if at all). It would be a nice memento for Hillary of her trip to Vietnam accompanied by Chelsea. But I have an idea it may end up in Hillary's attic.

YOUR comments are the ones that are tacky-- perhaps in the Vietnamese culture, this would be considered a valued gift, and, besides, it is hand beaded and made of semi precious stones. This is similar to someone painting a portrait of you based on a picture they took, No, it may not be your style, but for you to to post it on the internet and mock it is certainly is not a very classy thing to do IMO. I'm sure it took many hours to put this together and the Prime minister thought it was an appropriate gift. It is a nice picture of Hillary and Chelsea ( mother and daughter) for a wedding day gift.

This is a work of art, and may be a customary gift from a particular nation. Rike is right -- a little appreciation here. It probably meant a lot to the giver. Many people get wedding gifts they would not have chosen for themselves, but common courtesy demands that the giver is thanked and not derided.According to the description this is comprised of semi-precious jewels. The Clintons probably would have liked it to have been made of diamonds. Perhaps the giver is not aware of the Clintons' love of "registries."

Glad I do not know you as a person as you have an unhealthy negative attitude.Anyone who takes the time and energy to give any gift whether it is diamonds or a childs drawing should be thanked and never referred to as tacky!

Idiots like you will insure the USA will be at war forever. The American way is not the only way.
This was a beautiful and touching gift. Chelsea is a smart girl. I'm sure she cherishes the memories of travel in Vietnam, as she will cherish the gift. Learning about and respecting the culture of others is the true gift.
Get over yourself and grow a little bit.

The only thing 'tacky' is your attitude! When someone takes the time to make ~ or have made ~ a gift (for any reason), it should be accepted with grace and appreciation! I'm sure Chelsea accepted the gift as she should! You don't hear her bad-mouthing the gift OR the giver! Her behavior shows her upbringing ... as your comments reveal yours! Shame on you!

I must be a tacky person because I would -LOVE- this piece of art. Idiots will be idiots, and the same goes with those who have no appreciation of what went into making it. This writer is the worst of the worst. Just because they think it's tacky means nothing. This writers opinion doesn't matter one bit.

You do NOT speak on behalf of Americans! It is very RUDE to rip apart a gift from someone... Especially since it was so well thought out and took a lot of work.. Your comment represents a VERY spoiled attitude! In the future.. Speak for yourself!

To me the word tacky means doing something that shows no manners or behaving with no "class". A prime minister wouldn't want their country's gift to be a spice rack or a set of pots and pans or a place setting of china, that would be tacky. The gift from a country would have to be special and represent their people, which the gift clearly does. We may not appreciate it because of our culture but it is very special. Gift registeries are to show others what is desired and if it is still needed. Gifts are still gifts, and should be chosen by the giver.
