Today, Julieanne and I stopped in at American Eagle. We both needed jean shorts. Since it's basically winter in retail time, there weren't a lot of options to choose from. (Why do they do that? I'm just now starting to feel Erin: Dude, come check these out. This is so inappropriate.
Julieanne: Not really, they're short shorts. That's the point.
Erin: No, I feel like a suburban mom trying to wear her high school daughter's clothes. Like the mom in "Mean Girls."
Julieanne: [busts out laughing]
Erin: [heads back into the fitting room to change; leaves store empty-handed]

I am 45 years old and still the same size I was in high school. 5'4", 118 pounds. I work out daily and have been told many times that I have great
legs. Still, I think that short shorts should be left for the younger generation
to wear. I don't need to display my goods even though I could if I wanted to.
I think a woman my age should dress more appropriately especially if
they have teenagers. I certainly wouldn't want to embarrass my son if I showed
up at one of his football games in short shorts. Kids have enough to worry about, I don't want to add another.

21 seems like a really young cutoff age for short shorts. I live in the South and it's miserable here right now. Everyone wears little shorts here. I'd say anyone under 35, under maybe a size 16 or 18, and not a mother to anyone over five can pull them off, but maybe it's a little different in places where they're not so much a necessity.

I don't think it's an age thing really, though I would agree that as you get older, the percentage of people that can pull it off gets smaller and smaller just because people get less attractive, fatter, etc.
But 21 is ridiculously young to stop wearing them. I'm 25, almost 26, still wear short shorts, and still turn heads (in a good way). I wouldn't wear them to the office, but on a hot summer day while out and about? Heck yeah.

the shorts in the photo look perfect- not like short-shorts. I don't see what the problem is, shorts are just shorts. It's summer, you hang out in them or go to the zoo/amusement park in them, go grocery shopping in them... obviously if you need to look nicer and more grown/dressed-up, these do not fit the occasion.
And if you want longer ones, get bermudas because they always look nice.
