what to wear to a music festival
Packing your bags for a weekend music festival is like picking up for a cross-country road trip: both are required rites of passage for any summer-loving girl, and both require meticulous planning on just what stuff to stuff into your suitcase.

Leaving your closet behind for more than a night can be more stressful than waiting in line for an overflowing port-a-potty. And as each festival has a it's requisite uniform, it's up to you to decide how loud you want to turn up your style to look the part -- or whether you'll sing a totally different tune. From head banging at Ozzfest to stage-hopping at Lollapalooza, here's how to dress smart without sacrificing your summer style:

Downtown Cool: Lollapalooza, August 6-8, Grant Park, Chicago

As if the jam-packed schedule of Lollapalooza wasn't enough, this midwest festival staple movies the crowds to after-parties around the city once the 11 p.m. curfew rolls around. Therefore, you're going to want to something that goes from day-dancing in the grass to grooving in the dress to impress.

Style Notes: Distressed cut-off jeans that mix well with sweat and grime. Pair with a vintage concert tee (in lighter, sun-reflective shades) and a pair of casual kicks (think Converse or Keds) to move you from park stage to parked-at-a-bar.

+ High Music Festival, August 14-15, The Fields at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, Commerce City, Colorado

Rock Rebel: Ozzfest, August 14-24, 6 national tour dates
Ozzfest returns in full force after a one-year hiatus. The lineup calls for a trip to your local year-round Halloween store – or just some smart shopping.

Style Notes: With the bat-biting fiend himself headlining the tour, bidding for an Ozzy shirt on eBay is a good move. It's not like anyone can call you a poser -- they are seeing a guy who started in his own reality show. Another possiblitiy: venture into teen-angst heaven a la your local Hot Topic and pick-up an aresonol of studded accessories to prevent head-banging mosh-pitters from making you their martyr.

+ Rock Jam, August 27-28, Grand Junction, Colorado
+ Warped Tour, now – 8/15, national tour dates

Hip Hop Hotness:
Rock the Bells, August 21-22 (west coast) & August 28-29 (east coast)

No matter your coastal allegiance, wear trends that'll roll you into the venue VIP-style, even if you can't afford the festival's $400 "High Roller" tickets.

Style Notes: The one-day show means you can (and should) dress to impress. Expose skin in your favorite sundress, but shield eyes in rock star sunglasses. Keep shoes comfortable for all-day standing, but don't feel like you're overdoing it if you squeeze in a pedicure the day before the show. You never know if Snoop Dogg will pull you onstage during "Beautiful."

+ A3C Hip Hop Festival, October 7-9, Atlanta
+ Pitchfork Music Festival, July 16-18, Union Park, Chicago

Dancefloor Diva: Hard Summer Music Festival, August 7, Los Angeles State Historic Park, Los Angeles

Watching your favorite band perform under the sun is sweaty enough. Now imagine dancing to your favorite DJ in the same weather – bound to get hot pretty quickly, huh?

Style Notes: Wear anything that repeals sweat. Don't wear polyester, silk and (sorry) jeans. Materials to embrace: cotton – and less of it. Think American Apparel ads without the leggings. Pair a racerback tee with cotton-blend booty shorts and sneakers to keep your rhythm strong for the entirety of a DJ set (or at least until your glow stick burns out). Athletes, fish out your "wicking" clothing for ultra-sweatproof gear as hardcore as your dance moves.

+ Musicfest NW, September 8-12, various venues, Portland

Crazy Camp-Heads:
Camp Bisco, July 15-17, Indian Lookout Country Club, Mariaville, New York

Camping is like baseball – there's no crying allowed. So when it comes to setting up tent at a weekend-long music festival, keep on comfortable clothes that keep both whining and getting dressed in the morning (if you bother changing clothes) drama-free.

Style Notes: Wear the outfit that's easiest to move and groove in, which also keeps you safe from the sun and cool. A hat or scarf to keep your head covered prevents both nasty scalp sunburn and ticks (if your campsite is in the woods). You want shoes you're not going to loose in the mud, and you wa and old gym shirts. Avoid dragging mud into your sleeping quarters by wearing duck boots or galoshes. Keep a fleece jacket on hand for cool nights – or rep where you're from by wearing an old college sweatshirt.

+ Philadelphia Folk Festival, August 20-22, Schwenksville, PA

Cruisin' Cowgirl: Country Jam, July 22-24, Eau Claire, Wisconsin

The cowboy boots and matching hat that you worked as a Halloween costume can do double-duty at this festival and keep you yee-hawin' for long in the hot summer sun.

Style Notes: Rock all-American style to keep with country music's all-American groove. If you don't want to go classic Distressed denim shorts, cut-off baby tees and baseball hats are feminine, comfortable alternatives. Or, pair any light cotton skirt with bright tanks and sandals – just avoid the mud by the BBQ and the beer stop, or be prepared for dirtier toes than the pigs at the farm next door.
