Since April 20, when BP's Deepwater oil rig sort of, well, exploded and began pumping millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, ruining ecosystems and coastlines in the worst spill in history, a number of solutions have been attempted. They've tried sticking a giant dome over the pipe and pumping it full of garbage, for example, but a 21-year-old girl from Long Island may have come up with a solution that can actually work.It helps that Alia Sabur is a genius -- she began work on her engineering PhD at the age of 14 and become the youngest college professor in the history of America at the age of 18, and now she thinks she's got the answer to our problem. She calls it the "seabed retread," and it involves stuffing the leaking riser with a pipe surrounded by deflated tires, then inflating the tires.
Meet Another Person Who Thinks He Has a Solution
Although the tires might not be able to inflate completely inside the riser, it should be able to stem the flow of oil, which could then be redirected into a new pipe, she figures, according to calculations she sketched out on a piece of paper in typical genius fashion.Alia was reading before she could walk, had moved on to novels by the age of two, and was playing in an orchestra by 11. She's currently working on a doctorate in engineering from Drexel University, and although she hasn't gotten her idea to BP yet, she hopes they'll consider it if their efforts fail, even though it doesn't involve writing angry letters to Twitter or flooding the Gulf with golf balls.

Why not stuff the boken pipe with BP executives or BP stock certificates?

Sink a very large ship with a huge hole cut into the bottom that will totally cover all the area needed to be covered. If large enough it should trap oil inside. Have long hoses on its deck attached to waiting giant oil tankers on the surface. At least it will offer some time to drill a secondary hole to do what needs to be done.

Why does the article refer to this extremely intelligent young WOMAN as a "21-year-old girl"? No doubt if it was a male genius who had thought of a plan to stop the gusher he would certainly not be called a BOY.

how about this...cutting the pipe with a saw failed and now they are cutting it with hydrolic shears..instead of cutting it with shears, use a hydrolic crimper and squeeze it closed like a vise grip until oil stops flowing, sounds feasable to me....

I have e-mailed BP several times, they keep sending me to there career placement .what they need to do is build a large enough block of conrete with a slightly larger arch than the pipe on the bottom of it .It can also have a pliable rubber liner atattched to the arch, then lower it in place. It should temporarily block the leak or at least slow it down.

Maybe I'm just dumb but it seems to me that they have the solution already. The concrete dome cap should be the answer. I don't understand why it hasn't worked thus far. I read something about "ice crystals" clogging it the first time but it seems to me that this would be the best solution if they perfected the design and tried again. Why attempt all these crazy new ideas? I say go back to the cap and re-design it so it will work. Also, they should be planning to re-drill next to the old pipe to relieve the pressure as fast as possible.

i say we put 1ton of weed into the pipes and let it sit there and than we all smoke it thats the answer!!!!!!

Why not insert a 6" wide by 3-4' long charge of high explosive with a detonator using the drill rig to a depth inside the drilled well just at or slightly below the end of the well and detonate it. This ought to instantly collapse and/or plug the well permanently. There's no oxygen down there, so no risk of igniting anything. If it doesn't work, simply repeat until it is plugged.

Why not insert a 4" wide by 5' long high explosive charge with detonator into the mouth of the well and run it down to the bottom, then detonate. It theoretically would immediately collapse and/or plug the well with debris. If it doesn't work completely the first time, then repeat until it does.

another thing they could try is something like an air bag for a large mining dumptruck. just shove the bag in and fill it up.or maybe a type of screw plug. a 1 1/2 foot diameter rubber plug about four feet long with 2 plates on both ends so when you screw the 2 plates together the rubber expands. or...maybe they could....

I THINK THE PRESSURE DOWN THERE IS OVER A TON PER SQUARE INCH. WHAT KIND OF AIR PUMP AND A MILE OF WHAT KIND OF HOSE WILL IT TAKE TO INFLATE THE TIRES?

Sooooo..you mean t tell me I'm a genius because I thought of this a while back?? Almost the exact same idea...but more than likely will fail, I'm starting to believe BP is sabotaging their own "ideas" to keep this going, all in an attempt to create havoc..Either that, or they are as dumb as we think they are..and cant even solve a simple oil leak...Maybe it's time to let someone else fix this problem, I mean all they are doing is seemingly making it worse..

I thought of deploying an airbag in the hole a few weeks ago since it is pretty thick and might withstand the pressure. It should be rather inexpensive for the robotic arm to install and activate because it is c02. I had difficult time trying to send idea to BP so I stopped trying. I hope someone can utilize this idea especially if it works.

She may be a genius but it doesn't sound like she has enough common sense or practical knowledge to put her idea to use. Sounds more like some of the comic book solutions that were posted earlier.

Thank you, Alia. I hope you're right. You're a real sweetheart. Your next project is to figure out how we can get more people like you into our world!

I am completely amazed at some of thes proposals .Drop a ship on it ? The only thing I didn`t see was "use a condom" (Did I miss that one ) Although Miss Sabur`s idea at first sounds good , many very intelligent responders have explained why simple tires (Inner tubes ?) would not work. Some have advocated a "bladder" of some type,Yes, Ask any Nurse , Doctor, or Corpsman to insert a "catheter" into the pipe and you can bet it is a better idea than most of what is printed in the "comment section"

Drill a hole in the line, insert a deflated bladder (that withstands the pressure in question) that anchors to the side wall of the pipe and pump it full of concrete, no outside fluids mixing with the concrete will allow quick set-up of the concrete, pipe is plugged, well is closed

The pressure from the oil i very high so that has to be calculated in.Atapered steel projectile from rocket shot into it might work.

I had long figured if they ran a long tapered tube down the well with an inflatable seal it would stop the flow and leave the well viable.
Elementary at best.
