Some people have parents who are the epitome of controlling: uptight, tense, and they never let their guard down. You know the types. Parents who work hard and never play -- hard or otherwise. I do not have one of those parents. Those types of parents would never let their kid make margaritas with them on family taco night. Those types of parents would never smoke cigars with you on the back porch. And Those types of parents certainly would never take my sister and I to an all-inclusive resort in Cancun for spring break and tell us to "drink up while you can."
Those types of parents would never do that. But my mom sure did.
And that, I realized mid–tequila shot, is why I love her. All it took was a little trip to Cancun for me to discover ... the five places on an all-Inclusive adventure that can instantly up your mom's cool factor:
1. Check-In
In most families, and at most hotels, this might be a fairly humdrum experience. But when the hotel provides free mimosas upon check-in, they are inviting my family to fight. Because I'd be damned if my mom was going to have the first drink of spring break and not include me. So there, at the front desk, a tussle ensued over the single complimentary mimosa the hotel offered the both of us. Even though I emerged victorious, I admired my mom's pluck. If my dad had come on the trip, a fight between us would definitely not have had the same outcome. But a mimosa is a mimosa, and I wasn't going to let that slide.
2. The Hotel Club
This is where my younger sister got kicked out not once, but three times, for being underage. And yet my mom not only continually bought her illicit wristbands to get her in, she even fought with the bouncers on her behalf. This resulted in my sister's illegal admittance to the club more than once and allowed for family bonding time in the conga line, where tequila was poured down my sister's and my throats as we sashayed by. But it also led to a problematic face-off in the ...
3. Hotel Security Office
It was in this darkened, closed-door room that my mom finally met her match in the form of the hotel security manager. Her game was up despite her continued bald-faced lying about my sister's age and our family's involvement with the illegal wristband ring run by the hotel bellhops. My sister lost her 18-and-up wristband and her ability to engage in the never-ending supply of Miami Vices and Long Island Iced Teas and "Boom Boom" shots. What finally made my mom crack? Security had to threaten to kick us out of the hotel and contact the local authorities. I mean, my mom's a badass, but even she wasn't down for Mexican prison.
4. A bar ... any bar really ... so long as it's all-inclusive
Despite my sister's wristband handicap, she was still able to drink throughout the rest of the trip thanks to the supply of Dirty Shirley's and Strawberry Daiquiris that my mom and I provided. That is, until Luis the bartender saw me slip a drink to my sister and proceeded to threaten me, and even worse, refuse to serve me for the rest of the trip. So my mom stepped up her illicit drink-stealing game, and began to go drink for drink with my sister. This continued until she began yelling the same question eight times repeatedly across the bar. Then I decided it was time to go home. She still loudly maintained her sobriety though, even as she veered off the sidewalk. Thank God I have experience with many drunk sorority girls or else I would not have known how to handle that situation.
5. A cab ride
It got even better the nights my mom, my sister and I didn't have a collective stumble home from the hotel bar or disco, but instead ventured into downtown Cancun for a more formal night out. By formal I mean we wore sundresses with our flip flops instead of jean shorts. To the bars of Cancun, I say, "Gracias," for getting my mother drunk enough to begin buying me drinks. It saved me a lot of money and got the both of us drunk enough to do family shot rounds and run out of the bar still holding all of our glasses. But lastly, I would like to thank you, Cancun, for providing us with the nicest cab driver ever. Thanks to Raul we somehow managed to all get a half-hour cab ride back to our hotel... free of charge. We just walked out of the cab and into our rooms. Successful night? I think so.
So all in all, I saw my mom drunk, saw my mom commit international illegal activity, and watched my mom almost get arrested. And while I saw my little sister do basically all those same things, that's not quite as out of the ordinary. But my mom did it all, while creating very little embarrassment. She was actually pretty cool. Definitely not one of "those parents," and for that I am glad. Thanks Cancun, for a week I'll never forget, and one my mom will never remember!
Have a spring break story that pushes the boundaries? Think this mom ought to be locked up? Do tell!

Umm... cool? Call me crazy, but I love my mom for not trying to play the "cool friend" and take me out to get fall-over drunk. Encouraging your underage child to flaunt laws (as well as have no concern for possibly risking the jobs of the bar employees) and get totally wasted seems pretty awesome, too. Awesome and responsible.

Thank you for showing us there are still sane kids left on earth and not just morons and their moms!

You know she could be prosecuted in the U.S. for this. U.S. law applies to American citizens abroad.

If that is true she should be arrested.

They got a FREE half-hour cab ride? No explanation given for that, so I have to wonder (and imagine!) what Mother (and daughter[s]?) did to pull that off! You know how those college girls can be! Any naked pictures, or sex tapes? - What a great Mom! Can someone please give me a link to their website?

How insane is this mother!! Are you kidding me?! What the hell was she thinking?! I hope she does get arrested for the antics abroad and in the US. W
here is the father in all this, and does he condone the actions of the mother of his children. Sound like someone is trying to live vicariously through her children. All I can do is shake my head. And this girl thinks her mother is COOL?! This girl pretty much added to the deliquency of her minor sister along side her mother. They should both be beyond embarrassed and ashamed of their actions.

Yeah, awesome, your mom just taught your under-aged sister that it's okay to break the law as long as it's in order to have 'fun'. My mom's not one of "those parents" and we manage to have fun in a way that's a little more creative than getting plastered together in Mexico.

I like this comment. As I am a mother of two girls 13 and 10. I like to be fun and cool as a mom in creative positive ways. Not getting plastered together.
Please... have we learned anything in this country??

i went on an all-inclusive vacation with my mom also, and while it certainly wasn't as crazy as almost getting arrested, my mom and i did our fair share of drinking together with the other 2 mother-daughter couples with us. and frankly, i think it was perfectly healthy. my mom is by no means one who wants to be the "cool mom" during every day life, but we were on vacation in a city with a big party reputation, so i see nothing wrong with both her and i letting loose for that week. i suppose unlike her sister i was of legal drinking age in mexico at the time, but i don't think what that girls mom did was immoral or unethical. she was enjoying herself with her daughters, and i'm certain that when they got back to wherever there home is they went right back to a normal mother-daughter relationship and didn't keep pounding tequila. it's ok to relax and have fun between parents and children, as long as it's in moderation, just like everything else.

You think it is ok to give a child a drink? Is it ok for the a mother to drink while she is pregnant ? Maybe as you say in moderation. You are living in a dream world if you think this mothers ( I painfully use the term mother ) action in regards to the underage child will not affect her. The child will grow up to think it is ok to ignore all laws because "we are only having fun". So if she winds up on the news as a missing or dead little girl after a night of reckless underage drinking with friends it was ok because it was all in fun. Please grow up fast.

Amen sister!! People need to lighten up. I've had lots of drinks (mainly a few glasses of wine) with my Mom....she's hysterical when she's tipsy!! There are far more important things to get your panties twisted up about..

Underage drinking even when their is " parental permission" in public is never okay. The bartender and the establishment does and will get in trouble. The bartender and the management staff will get fired. The place will lose it's liqour license. And the bartender could face criminal charges if something were to happen to anyone that got to drunk and drove. I had to deal with this in NYC where I bartended in a returant . Out of states parents wanted there kids to have wine during diner and I said no. If they still let there kids drink from a glass they were ask to leave. So you think you are just having fun, but you are actually playing with other peoples lives. So it's not okay.

You don't see what that mom did as immoral or unethical? I suppose if these girls were alone in Mexico and one of the "locals" did the same with her underage daughter you wouldn't consider that as immoral or unethical either? I'm sure her mother would be raising a ton of hell if the tables were turned. Against the Law is Against the Law no matter if in Mexico or the US. The mother should be ashamed as well as arrested. As mentioned in another comment, the mother had no concerns for the bartenders or bouncers to involve them in her illegal scheme. This is their livelihood and all could have been lost on her foolishness to want to be her daughters' friend instead of a responsible adult.

oh just to let you know. In our family drinking was not considered a taboo. We were aloud to drink at home. In the saftey of our own house. I think it is more of a cultural think being of south american and european descent. But my parents never gave any one elses children alchol. It was only wine or wine coolers sometimes beer or champagne. We never got "wasted". We grew up not putting any importance to drinking. We don't need it to have fun. Binge drinking has never been a problem with any of us. But we all did aquire a taste for finer liquors.

Wow how cool is that! All those people got to see a middle aged mother pretend that she's her daughters age! Your mother took a vacation from being a mature adult. Should I find a local AA meeting for all of you?

This mother should be ashamed for allowing drinking. You cannot be your child's best friend, but a mother who loves her child enough to not want her to miss a Spring Break and goes with her is a Mom who realizes the need for protection! Had there been enough parents/chaperones on the Halloway (not sure of spelling, sorry)situation possibly would not have happened.
