I admit it -- I root for Jessica Simpson. And not just in the last year, during which she's been a victim of horrendous high-waisted pantswear and heinous verbal diarrhea. (I'm looking at you, John Mayer.) In fact, ever since she was a Newlywed, I've found her charming (albeit ditzy) and warm-hearted (albeit naïve). So, I was psyched to witness her return to reality TV on VH1 in Jessica Simpson's "The Price of Beauty". Except, this time, she's casting her relationship with beauty and body image. (The lemons-to-lemonade result of last year's "mom jeans" debacle.) Viewers are invited to tag along with Jess, her BFF CaCee Cobb and other BFF/stylist Ken Paves as they travel the world, learning about the lengths women will go to for beauty. In the process, the self-conscious star hopes to "find beauty for herself ... a tall order."
I may not be a pop star, but like many a girl who spent her seminal years devouring "Sweet Valley High" and Seventeen, I can relate -- I'm in.
Last night, we viewed Jess's first venture out of her charmed Hollywood "fishbowl" -- to Thailand. Upon arriving, she and Ken endure aggressive Thai massages, before being greeted by their local Beauty Ambassador, Sonia Couling, who is Thailand's answer to Tyra Banks in that she's a model-turned-TV host.
Couling explains that the Thai idealize pale skin and then introduces them to a woman whose skin has been permanently burned by skin-lightening cream. Jess is brought to tears; she does seem to get it and is truly dismayed by the woman's story. This scene seems to best embody the show's title and goal. But then there are other moments, which while probably meant for comic relief, chip away at the big picture.
I cringe when Jess and CaCee make a loud scene in the Thai marketplace, gagging while eating bugs. (Girls, take a tip from Tony Bourdain and at least try to play it cool while taste-testing fried anthropods.) On another tsk-tsk occasion, Jess busts out in a fit of giggles during a meditation with a Buddhist monk. After the fact, she explains apologetically that she couldn't be at peace with herself and notes that maybe she has a "little more work to do." Thankfully, she does have a chance to, as the group presses onward-riding elephants to a village north of Bangkok, where they meet and feast with the Karen Hill tribe of vividly dressed "ring neck women." The tribe's statement piece is made of 20-plus lbs. of golden rings, which are meant to elongate the neck. A time-honored tradition, the rings may ultimately crush a woman's rib cage. It's easy to see how hefty a price that is to pay for beauty.
I guess it's too soon to say if a sprinkling of flippant faux pas that Jess and Co. make while abroad will hamper her ultimate objective of spotlighting various standards of beauty -- which is a totally worthy endeavor. As you can probably tell, I'm still cheering for her to achieve the latter. Although doing so almost cracked my face mask last night.
You can watch the bug-eating meltdown here, and decide if you, too, are rooting for Team Jess.

I was a HUGE fan of Jessica too, until I read that she doesnt BRUSH her teeth!! I dont have the most perfect teeth in the world but they are brushed everyday, at least twice, sometimes 4 or 5 times depending on what the day brings.... I cant imagine what her breath has to be like!!!

Yuck! That's just nasty! And for her to admit that is as bad as the comments John Mayer made about her.

If you hold on to your judgement for one minute, think, have you ever seen a pic of jessica before. Have you ever seen her smile? Do you see her amazingly clean bright white smile. She was obviously joking when she said that. Maybe she forgets to brush every once in a while, but i doubt her breath is that bad. If you were truly a fan of her sbefore, than this little bit of humor wouldnt hurt your feelings that badly now...

I adore Jessica and have since watching Newlyweds. We are very similiar in we both make silly comments and act a little goofy at inopportune moments. I did think Jessica was an idiot for divorcing Nick, but noone knows the whole story but these 2 so it is what it is. Not our business. I do find it funny shes looking forward to turning 30, when I remember quite vividly, her walking up her stairs on newlyweds, talking about being 24, which is almost 25, which is 1/4 a century lol. Shes classically funny, and I wish her nothing but the best. and yes, I would gag- maybe even throw up, at the bugs myself. As for the toothbrushing thing- did anyone realize that she could have been joking? Her teeth look clean, white, and healthy to me.

Let's face it...she didn't divorce Nick. He left her. She let her father get between them. Papa Joe has a weird obsession with his daughters. He had moved into a room in their house and was there 24/7. That had to be a strain on a new marriage, especially since he was almost too competitive for Jessica's attention against Nick. Remember the ep where they went to Mexico and went 4wheeling? The old man is weird and his daughter took up for him against her hubby. Next thing you know, she's off shooting a movie and sleeping around on her hubby. No wonder they got divorced! (This is coming from a big fan of Newlyweds and was very surprised at its outcome)

Hate to inform you guys, but Jessica ADMITTED on the View that she DOES NOT brush her teeth. She says she has done it before, but that she just washes her mouth out with mouthwash now. She said her teeth "is pretty strong now but that she will probably lose them in older age."

Any movie, reality show, etc. with Jessica Simpson is going to FLOP!!!!!! No one enjoys listening to this BIMBO. Most cannot stand her. She is a has been and needs to go out to pasture and vegitate. She is done just as her effort to find a man in her life. There is something definitely wrong with this woman who cannot hold onto love. Hope she fades away like Paris Hilton did, thank GOD......

I think Jessica's show was quite good on Monday night. For being just a half hour, it seems a lot was crammed in during a short period of time. I think Jessica was just the common American experiencing things for the first time overseas and caught off guard by a lot of what was there.
I'm not sure if I'd have been able to eat bugs. I remember my dad trying to show me how to eat prawns. He started describing it, and I couldn't put one near my mouth or even try after that. So Jessica was likely adventurous for trying. At the same time, I did try soy coffee one time at a state fair. I took a mouthful of it, and it was so God awful that I couldn't even keep it in my mouth. I spat it out right there in front of my mom, uncle, a family friend, and the poor woman who offered the sample to me. I was very embarrassed about it. So, the whole thing about overreacting about food or drinks that don't appeal to our tastes just happens.
Actually, giggle fits happen too at the worst of times. I remember being a high school freshman playing in band at the seniors' graduation ceremony. Somebody got up there and read a poem that, while inspirational at the time it was written, was filled with sexual connotations in today's language. It's just how language changes. No matter how hard I tried to hold back, I got an uncontrollable case of the giggles. I've also had that happen in church when singing in choir. We had an impossible hymn to sing, and I got a case of the giggles trying to sing it. The other choir members got the giggles watching me giggle, and the poor director looked like a deer in the headlights. So, being there at some poitn in my life where I was laughing inappropriately, I can't judge Jessica for getting the giggles during a very long meditation.
If anything, Jessica came across as a normal young woman and somebody we could relate with.

Maressa, what bothers me is that why do you even like Jessica Simpson, let alone try to like your show. You mean to tell me that you like Jessica Simpson, a person who effortlessly became #1, surpassing Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera with her Newlyweds show, who couldn't even sell an album w/out her show (an annoyance to those who live in a Taylor Swift, Twilight stars world, etc, even an annoyance in her heyday), over someone who deserves more praise than anyone else such as Lauren Conrad for what she does? Maressa, don't bother w/ Jessica Simpson period. Get your priorities straight.

I had a difficult time reading the article. The first few paragraphs didn't flow very well; and despite the fact I feel for Jessica Simpson, I almost stopped reading mid-way. Then I noticed it was submitted by a "special guest blogger," and all was forgiven . . . until I noticed the "assistant editor" credit at the end. I realize there are deadlines to meet and submitting articles for publication can be stressful, but PLEASE do a better job editing. When users submit comments that are more pleasurable to read than the article, it's time to find another job.

Why do you care what other people like? Im pretty sure Maressa's "PRIORITIES" are straight. Her liking Jessica simpson is none of your business nor should it effect you in any way. If you dont like her, dont watch her show or buy her alblums. Dont read these article if you dont care about her or the people that do. We all may not like a band or artist you like but we wont tell you that your wrong in liking them. We are all different for a reason and we all like different things. Why dont you get your priorities straight and stop commenting on things that you dont care about. Jessica has a lot of fans, me included, I have bought all her alblums, enjoyed them all and watched all her shows and movies. Shes a funnny, beautiful (if sometimes ditzy, who cares?) talented person. We dont need people like you spewing negativity about things we like. Nor would you like people saying your favorite band is stupid or shouldnt record another song.

I love Jessica. I loved Newly Weds, and I couldn't wait for this show to start. I agree with the part in the show where she was eating bugs. I think she has matured a lot since Newly Weds, but I feel like she is trying to cling to that Ditzy Jessica. I think she is past it---but she feels like people expect it from her at this point...

no one cares what you do and dont do..its obvious you dont to anything..dad is trying so hard to up your career and it is not working...stop trying to get the sympathies of the public..now you ar trying to fit in and pretend to be a regular person..its too late..give it up and get a real job..why do you lie about not brushing your teeth when you go to the dentist on a regular basis...unfortunately many cannot afford to go that need to...so stop your lies..its a same that you have to resort to lies to get publicity and once again you are using this smile program so that people will think that you do charity work..stop using people...take tips from brad pitt and angelina..they do real charity work...not you..you just do it for publicity..people have caught on to you and once again its all about you...Will not watch show because it features jessica simpson-a true hyprocrite on beauty(getting plastic surgery for big nose from dad as well as other surgergies-sister did too-your kids will probably have big noses as well-will they be getting plastic surgery too?) This show is supposedly about embracing what you are born with not fixing your flaws--give it up jessica this show will not boost your poor ratings as an actress or a singer...these are real people you are dealing with..if you think you are suppose to act like you care well you are not going to fool viewers because we all know what a bad actress you are...its not about you...how dare you have a show where people are suppose to be comfortable with their looks or who they are when you cant even do that for yourself..thats why you get made fun of all the time...you are unbelievable and men will continue to use you and mock you..you should have stayed with Nick he was an honest hardworking guy who cared about you no matter how horrible of a person you are..he was willing to over look that and accept you as the ugly person that you are..but dad stepped in and convinced you to divorce him because he wasnot doing anything to up your career..well look at the guys he picked for you..they brought publicity to your career too bad it was all bad ...get a new manager..fire dad and maybe you can have a decent life...unfortunately your career is shot and this show is not going to make a difference or up your career or make people think..oh she is one of us or she cares..on the previews...its a shame that she comes in with her looks and stands out over everyone...it is unfortunate that these girls featured will only appear as victims...i hope they cancel. this show soon do that it will not hurt or expose this girls that are the true beauty of women...not jessica simpson(so plastic)its all about mee-ee
