When we got a press release about "Mad Men" Barbies, we were cautiously excited. Sure, Barbies are the worst, but maybe Joan Holloway's unbelievable curves would be the perfect opportunity for Mattel to shake up the shape of its bizarrely proportioned little effigy of ladyhood. But, um, as you can see at left, opportunity missed.
In fact, the Joan doll is pin-thin, proportioned exactly the same as the Betty Draper doll (see below). We get that Barbie is one-size -- but this would have been the perfect opportunity for her not to be. Christina Hendricks' ridonkulous body breaks the mold -- so why couldn't Mattel have?

Well...today's kids are obviously too easily emotionally damaged. No articles about how GI Joe should not have weapons lest he promote a "violent, warlike" image? How 'bout the new action figure for Muslim kids, "Jihad Joe"? (I only included that comment to see how much of a rise I can get from the squishy Liberal crowd. C'mon, let's hear the screams.)

why is people so focused on Barbie? Come on! Barbie has been blamed on girls not wanting to eat becouse they wanted to be as "skinny" as a DOLL! Parents need to tell the children it is JUST A DOLL.
OKAY people it is just a doll. So what if the body is not disportioned.

By Hi Everyone!
I played with Barbie Dolls in the sixties when women were burning their bras, fighting for equal rights, equal pay and most of all not to be seen just as a mother or as housewife. Most importantly Women wanted to be seen as a person with brains not just boobs. Oddly enough with all that going in the world I with given a Barbie for Christmas when I was six. She had brown hair blue eyes. I had blonde hair and brown eyes. Needless to say I was told it was to play Grown-Up make believe, needless to say I was never taught that this was what a woman should look like. Looking back I was taught beauty comes from the inside of a person that compiled with manners, self-respect, and given confidence is what a girl needs instead of all of these beauty pagnets that make them look older than they are is asking for trouble...instead of spending money spend time with the "girl" in your life. It is a toy to play "Make Believe" My granddaughter has all of the Barbie Princess collection dolls and trust me she does know that playing "princess" is MAKE BELIEVE!

I was on a cruise & I met these two mid-twenties women that had made themselves into living Barbie Dolls. I'm talking the blonde hair, dresses, perfect complection, figures, everything. While I was talking to them they actually mentioned how they had done this purposely. They said they kept having women bitch them out when they even got near their significant others. Personally, I thought they were fantastic. Then again, I'm a man...Al-

I don't care that Barbie is thin. She wouldn't be Barbie if she wasn't. I am 52 years old. From the time that I was born to about age 40, I was thin. I could and would eat anything, and I always stayed thin. Then, when I turned 40, i had to start taking medication that in turn caused me to gain weight very rapidly. So rapidly that I didn't even know how to buy clothes for an overweight person-myself. It has been a very difficult haul for me. I was used to always being thin, respected, and admired. Now I am "obese", treated like I am stupid, and no longer admired. Inside is still the same person. When I am not in front of a mirror, in my mind I am still that thin person. But my point is that size does not define the person, but society on size does. I know what is was like when I was thin to have my curvey friends tease me because I liked to walk every day. I know what it is like to have people treat me adversely because of my obesity. I know I am a beautiful person either way. Would I prefer to be thin? Yes, because I could do so much more physically and, to my shame, because I want to be accepted. I think God allowed me to go through this so that I could understand both sides of the fence. Don't be mean to fat or even thin people. You never know what it's like until you've walked the path.

ok, so you change the shape and size of a barbie doll. then you have to make all new clothes and the consumers have to buy a new wardrobe for the new barbie. I don't know about you, but I don't think so. The last time I checked, the clothes were expensive enough. not ready to donate to the goodwill and start over.

Yes, it would have been nice for them to make Joan more accurately sized. I think Christina Hendricks is more beautiful with the curves then when she started acting without the curves. And men like curves! So why is it that toy companies and pop culture as a whole can't accept this fact? It took us a while to get a black princess in the Disney movies, maybe it will take another decade to get a curvy Barbie or princess. Only time will tell.

Perhaps some clever person could make some clothes (and maybe stockings) with padding in all the right places to make barbie more Joan like. Her head is already a bit big for real human proportions, so it should work.
