A new study says seeing the likes of Beyoncé (read: tiny waist, curvy hips) really lights up men's brains. Soon newspapers across the country (and the world) touted it as a victory for women. No longer would we have to bow to the ideal of the waif-y runway model! Now we could have our French fries and eat them, too! But then it turned out the pictures in the study that had men all aglow were women who went under the knife to look that way.
Er ... ex-squeeze us? Did we miss something? To find out, we cornered the study's author, Dr. Steven Platek, associate professor of psychology at Georgia Gwinnett College, to ask him: What gives?
Lemondrop: First of all, what gave you the idea to do this study?
Dr. Platek: There's been a lot of research done about the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) in women, with the optimal WHR being 0.7. Studies show that women with a 0.7 WHR are healthier in general, have better cardiac health, better mental health, less complications during pregnancy, are less likely to die during labor, have less post-partum depression and their offspring experience a slightly higher IQ score. It's such a great cue that women give men.
And you wanted to know if men were picking up on it ...
So are you saying men are actually addicted to looking at bodies like those of J.Lo and Beyoncé?
No, I'm not saying that. We might be able to use this information in the future to help us better understand illnesses like pornography addiction. But for the average guy, who's not a porn addict, I think what this data shows is that these women capture our attention unknowingly. I told one of my students the other day that you could really do this experiment very easily. You can sit a guy down in the cafeteria and ask him to write an intense letter or term paper and tell him he can't look away from the screen. Then systematically have two girls walk by -- one who doesn't have an optimal WHR and one who does. After that, you can go back and look at the number of typos, and I would bet my paycheck that the number would be about four times as high when the optimal female body walked by. What I'm saying is that shape, through our evolutionary history, has trained the male brain to pay attention because the outcome means high reproductive success.
Does this mean we can't get mad at our husbands/boyfriends for looking at women? Because it's instinctive?
Heck no! Listen if you're out with your boyfriend, and he's looking away, then give him a shot to the back of the head. If you and your man are walking hand-in-hand, skipping down the street and Beyoncé comes walking the other way, he will know he should not turn his head and pant like a hound. And he knows you will probably smack him upside the head if he does. But what the study shows is that even though he's consciously inhibiting that action of turning his head and panting like a dog, his brain is actually still paying attention to her.

At first glance, this study seems to be a victory for naturally curvy women, but all of the women in the study were surgically altered in order for the men to be attracted to them. So now we don't have to starve ourselves, but we have to have surgery in order to turn heads?
Great question, and the answer is no. I used the women who had plastic surgery in order to have a controlled set of stimuli -- to show men the exact same body of a woman side-by-side, one having the optimal WHR and one not. But in the real world, this optimal body shape is how women are designed through natural selection, through biology: We're not designed to sit around and eat Bon Bons and watch "Gossip Girl" and get overweight. And we're not designed to sit around and eat one carrot a day and starve ourselves. We're designed to eat a healthy diet and move around. To keep this naturally occurring WHR, which most women are born with, you have to move the way your body was designed to move. If you think about it, our cavemen ancestors never did bicep curls, but they probably swung an ax at a tree, which engages your core and hips and legs. There's a great workout program called CrossFit, which trains these functional fitness techniques and actually maintains the optimal female body shape.
So, from an evolutionary standpoint, how do you explain the Kate Mosses of the world, who are just naturally thin?
That's the great thing about this study -- it's not about size. Women who are very thin can still have a WHR of .7. It's not the size of the woman, it's the configuration. You could be a size 2 and still have a WHR of 0.7, or you can be a size 22 and have a WHR of 0.7. And the best part is men are going to find both of those women more attractive than women who are a size 2 or 22 and don't have the ratio.
Pass the fries.

I wish we could talk about men's bodies the same way we are forever talking about women's t*ts and ass. I mean, can we debate whether slender men's bodies are actually attractive, or muscle bound gym rat bodies, or strong but stocky, or skinny with a pot belly? Who the F ever discusses broad shoulders, legs like trunks, man boobs, love handles (the only thing men seem to obsess over), hairy chest, hairless bodies, thick necks, skinny legs with knobby knees and dark hair? Please. The majority of women take men for who they are. They like a type—football "big guy," anything tall, slim, beach body, average with broad shoulders and little belly—and they find them attractive and love them without excuse. Women are so much more "forgiving" of men's bodies than they are of their OWN. (And by forgiving, I don't even know what's there to forgive. Like we've committed an infraction for having a belly or thighs) So here is a comment board full of men, some say they like the skinniest woman on earth, others saying they like a little meat on their bones, bigger boobs, narrower hips, slimmer leg, bigger butt, whatever. And this study ignores a lot of men's preferences in order to prove a point that will only serve to make some 75% of women feel pretty rotten about their bodies. Thanks, Dr. Platek, for giving women who are neither waify nor hourglass, more reason (a "scientific" one at that!) to hate their bodies and not trust their boyfriends or husbands when they swear they are the hottest, most beautiful, most attractive women on earth.

I was dubious when I saw the title of the article, it sounded like that pulpy tabloid crap. not a terrible article, but the journalism was a bit sloppy this time. i was rather surprised to read about what was REALLY being studied, the title of the article was rather misleading. unfortunately, i have no life and so i read the comments. all of them. now i'm going to give my comment...about the comments.
People of the Internet; who you're attracted to isn't a)going to be the same as anyone else, and b) NOT UGLY JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T PERSONALLY FIND SOMEONE UNATTRACTIVE!!
that's right, world. i will reiterate my point: JUST BECAUSE YOU DO NOT PERSONALLY FIND A PERSON OR ATTRIBUTE TO BE ATTRACTIVE DOES NOT MAKE THAT PERSON OR ATTRIBUTE 'UGLY' TO EVERY ONE ELSE. AND BEING A COMPLETE ASS ABOUT IT "oh, Beyoncé's ass is so disgusting" IS NOT A VALUE JUDGEMENT, IT IS JUST YOUR OPINION AND HAS NO BEARING ON LIFE IN THE REAL WORLD.

Well you're attracted to what you're attracted to, but you can be petite and still have curves! Normally models are not petite because petite usually means you are under 5 foot and 5 inches tall and have short legs.

And curves does not always mean fat. In fact, curvy usually doesn't mean fat.

I just can't get over how some people think curvy is fat. Curvy is a word to describe a certain body shape. Someone who is not overweight in the least can have a curvy body shape. You can be curvy and not be big boned. Just because you are over weight does not mean you're big boned, it just means you're over weight. You have to be tall to be big boned, it goes along with being big boned. The average height for women is 5'3" to 5'6". The taller you are the more likely it is that your body frame will be larger. It's called proportionate.

Here's the deal about bodies ok. If your fat...men don't want nothing to do with you. If your skinny, blonde, with big tits, and are willing to suck a dick for some cash...men will be all over you. Men are the most shallow creatures in the world.
That's my opinion and yes, I am a fat girl who hates skinny people. So bitch all you want because I will just laugh at all the stupid ass comments I recieve after this.

This study seems to be validating plastic surgery more than anything else. Plus it's not really clear how it was carried out. Did the men see before and after pics of those surgically enhanced women? Then definitely they'll tend towards the after.
I personally feel...that Beyonce or JLo aren't really that hot. They are just excellent performers. How about Katherine Zeta Jones? Zhang Ziyi? What makes a woman attractive is the whole package. How she carries herself, whether she's pretty, what's her style, can you stand talking to her. It is the little things that add up to create beauty.
Awareness of feminity, a well-kept proportionate body, and mystifying confidence are what I think defines an attractive lady. Maybe throw in a tinge of submission as well, but not too much. I am Bi and somewhat shallow if that adds to anything. ;)

How is this a 'new study'? Is it really supposed to be a surprise that men like hourglass figures?
Also, while all articles advocating for curvy figures are correct in asserting that 0.7 is the ideal WHR regardless of weight, gaining (or losing) weight can still make that ratio fluctuate-- so no, don't just "Pass the fries." Considering how much of the US is overweight, I'm betting the majority of women would have to lose weight in order to achieve a more desirable WHR.

A well endowed female is great but it is the attitude. If I am expected to get along with and provide for a person I want a certain amount of brain stimulation and respect.

A ratio of .7 is still not that curvy. To get my ratio at a .7 I would have to loose a couple inches on my hips. I'm 24" waist and 37 " hips. The models are expected to have a 24" waist and 34" hips which is a ratio of .705. So that is not curvier, that is what models are.

I agree with Jessica too - I am a white girl in a black girl's body - I have a booty, I have a Beyonce shape, but alas I am not beautiful like she is - just an average looking girl. I have to have all my clothes adjusted because they don't make them for women with curves - all the waists are too big and the tops too small - I wear all different sizes and then have them all tailored. My husband likes me this way and said he doesn't like skinny boy-like women because he likes the softness of a curvaceous (not overweight at all) woman - yay me!

"Wow What a Huge Waste Of Time. Beauty Is In The Eye Of The Beholder. I Personally Like My Women With Some Meat On Their Bones. Not Fat, But Healthy. No Bones Please. Super Skinny Is Not For Me. " (quoting, a guy up above).
I agree... Beauty is in the Eye of the 'Beer Holder'.....
And women have almost raped me a time or two coming out of a bar, dance club, party..... because the "booze" got the better of them and I appeared
50 times better than I actually am.
Also, the comment about sitting there at the dinner table at a restaurant , ( or what have you )... I would comment but have no time just this minute......
oh well.... :o)

I would like to see a study like this done with women who NATURALLY have the WHR of 0.7! I still don't understand WHY he had to use surgically altered women for the study. Did these women have other parts altered (mainly their breasts)??? I think the fact that he only used surgically altered women skews the results from this study quite a bit.

Women come in all different shapes and sizes. One thing that annoys me about society today is that people see curvy women with big hips as overweight. They don't seem to understand that hips won't change!

what are you talking about only negroes can have bodies like this. like what? this study has nothing to do with big jelly thighs or big fat asses. this study is about waist to hip ratio which has nothing to do with being overly fleshy! and if you pay close attention there are way more caucasian and hispanic women( who are bi-racial, caucasian and indian mix) with tiny waists and wide hips then the average looking negroe woman who may have a huge ass and thick thighs but generally their waists are pretty thick too!!!! asians also have this hourglass shape just in a smaller package. so many people who commented didn't understand the point of the article. Most men are just really attracted to the feminine SHAPE not size. they don't want to look at women that look like prepubesent boys( oh and kim kardashian isn't afro-negroe anything!)

sorry i meant native american mix! which reminds me, many indian and middle eastern women have beautiful waist to hip ratios, must be the belly dancing. so all those negroes who think they own the patent on curvy bodies just get over yourselves. all of us other races don't own the rights to beautiful smooth silky hair, oh no wait we do!!
