Ever since Gemma Ward strutted down the Chanel runway on two things that more closely resembled human legs than fleshy toothpicks that bend, the supermodel has had a hard time getting work, reports the most recent issue of Page Six magazine. Aw, come on!What does a "fat model" look like? You're looking at it. The picture at left is from the night Ward shocked the fashion world by being "big." In fact, after the show one headline read: "CHANEL SPRING '08 EMBRACES THE BIG GIRL."
Dear Lord Above, if that's a big girl, we may as well eat tubs of frosting for the rest of our lives, because we ain't never going to be thin.
Gemma started modeling when she was 16, which means that we were all looking at the cover of Vogue wondering why we couldn't look like someone who should have been studying 10th-grade geography.
How incredibly messed up is that? Now she's 22 and has filled out accordingly, which unfortunately means work for her is very scarce, even though we would love to see a model who isn't an amalgamation of sharp angles and jutting bones.
After all, there's always another rail-thin teenager out there somewhere who would gladly take her place. Maybe modeling agencies should look to the UK, where teenage girls are starving themselves so they can look like the "before" Gemma. Good job, fashion industry: From now on I'm buying all my clothes from Conway, just to be sure you don't get my money.

That girl (in that pic) has a nice and actually normal build, more models should look like her. Unfortunately the industry only seems to want dying cadavers or fat cows. Either you can see every bone protruding from a girl who's never eaten a salad because it has too many calories, or it's the 'plus-sized' models who go through a box of twinkies before reaching the end of the checkout line.
Although naturally they descend into the usual phony problem of 'starving girls.' Oh please, the UK, like the US, has an obesity problem, not anorexia. Worry about the REAL health problem before other crap. The problem is too many whales telling themselves they're 'curvy and healthy' and eating without abandon, not the girl who skips dinner every now and then. Get a clue.

Do not blame this on just gay men. Alot of gay men love the curves of a women's body. It's always the minority of every different minority that gets blamed. The fashion industry is what it is. I know friends, male and female that can eat nonstop and are thin. I think more real women modeling is great, not just the thin ones. I'm a gay man and in West Hollywood I deal with not being so thin as others are that work out for hours. I'm happy with myself, and who I am inside and that is what matters. Fashion is fun, and a big part of society, but accept yourself for who you are. Improve yourself if you are unhealthy but don't look at models and think there is something wrong with you.

Gemma is gorgeous. I have always been a fan and still am whatever the size on her clothes says. She isn't fat at all and even if she is a little bigger than some of the super-skinny models out there I think that is a great thing. She looks like she is alive and healthy not some emaciated zombie trailing down the runway. If anything she looks better now than ever. If people don't want to hire her they must be blind and/or crazy. There should be more models that look like she does.

idk why people keep on insisting that she's not fat when in fact she is fat for what her job description says. she's a model PERIOD. nobody makes a fuss of sumo wrestlers being so big even though it is obviously very unhealthy but sumo wrestlers need to be fat bec. that's what they need to get the job! its fine if the rest of you comfort gemma and says she's not fat but be sure to to pay for living expenses ok?!

She's just out of luck...Really tall thin models just look better than other women, esp. in clothes. Just b/c some starve themselves to get thin, doesn't mean they should change industry standards and start hiring size 6, size 8 models. They just don't look as good in clothes as the thin ones do. Sorry, that's just a fact. Instead of changing the size of the models, why don't the stupid models that starve themselves get a nutritionist to put them on a sensible diet and exercise plan to lose the weight. You can lose PLENTY by eating sensibly and exercising. Bull crap.
