Call it a literal battle of the sexes: Researchers just revealed that the male Y chromosome is more evolved than ours. The discovery -- unearthed by a female MIT researcher -- shows that the Y chromosome has advanced so much over the last 6 million years that there's now a 30 percent difference between the male genetic code and that of chimps, our nearest ancestor. For the rest of the human genetic code, there's only a 2 percent difference.
Naturally, the findings have men cheering and women scoffing in disbelief over the idea that males could possibly be more advanced. But the researchers caution that just because man's genetic code has evolved doesn't mean his behavior has.
Y Marks the Spot
Jennifer Hughes and her MIT colleague outline the new study in the journal Nature. You can read the full scientific jargon of the two-year research project here.
The abridged version: The Y chromosome rocks because it isn't part of a pair like the rest of our 44 chromosomes, meaning that when gene mutations occur, there's no matching chromosome to overshadow them. But it also has to do with female chimps being little hussies when in heat. By mating frequently with many partners, the females force the males to produce the most and best sperm.
And while 6 million years seems like a long time to us, the changes Y has undergone in that span would take other chromosomes about 310 million years to get right.
This news is remarkable for science because researchers previously thought not only that the X sex chromosome was evolving more rapidly than the Y, but that Y was in danger of becoming extinct all together. So, the news is obviously a self-esteem booster for the previously underachieving, close-to-dying male gender.
The Mudslinging Begins
But thanks to headlines like "Are Men More 'Evolved' Than Women?" neither gender is acting very evolved in its response to the study. Check out these comments from the Huffington Post's piece:
Joan1111 says, "In general terms ... men may be more evolved than women, but they just don't behave like they are. Evolution doesn't necessarily equal emotional maturity."
Suemag adds, "The gender that scratches its' balls and pees outside is NOT more evolved than mine."
Tazirai says, "It's funny that an article comes out.. kinda in defense of men... and it's criticized, because of it's defense of men. We just can't win for losing lol."
Genetics aren't the same as behavior, so Y's rapid advancement doesn't mean men are acting any more advanced than women (nor does it mean their brain power now trumps women's). And even if more gene mutations occur to separate men from their chimp ancestors, we won't see the outcome of the changes in our lifetime.
But the men do deserve a hand for rallying back from near extinction. Somebody cue "I Will Survive."

Come on, teenwilliams! Darwin never said we were once monkeys. He THEORIZED that we descended from "ape-like" creatures… hominids.

The issue is that not every perosan is a good person , female or male andit depends upon he individual . Look at the amount of criminals , more males, and how many children have been killed aby theriparents , a man asked hei girlfriend " Get rid of your children they interfere with us" and she did.
Killed her five children. A sick couple.

When humans developed abstract thought, genetic development no longer meant what it does in other species. Genetics could never account for cars or airplanes or nuclear fission, all human developments or discoveries owing to abstract thought. Genetics, in fact, will never account for the rapid developments of science, so humans will have to invent medicines and perhaps machines that allow our always outdated genetics to keep pace with our self-made world.

Interesting article, as it states men are more evolved than women. This doesn't mean more intelligent or superior. It could possibly mean more adaptive, quicker problem solving, and different reasoning methods, as many of the other comments stated. I do find it interesting in the fact that this could explain the reason why so many genetic mutations are occurring and we are experiencing more than normal birth defects, such as down syndrome and autism. The genes are not matching up with one another the way they used to in the past, could this mean the world is getting closer to the end?
As a believer in Christ, I do believe God made man, but also has allowed man to evolve to live in the world as it is at that point in time. In the past, man needed to have an animal instinct to mate and fill the earth. Now we have to learn how to survive and fight off new outbreaks and pandemics. If you think about it God's time isn't our time. 7 days in the bible could mean billions of years. Thus, giving birth to the age old question who/what created the big bang. Had to come from somewhere, not just out of the blue.
In conclusion, men are men and women are women. We will always be different no matter what science says. Possibly the reason we have evolved faster was because of the way women were regarded in the past. Stay at home and clean. Now women are out of the house and doing the same things as men, but this is a change that has taken place over the past 100 years, maybe even less. Men had 6 millions years of out side the house evolution, if we were to have reversed the roles would this article read different?

Well said, Tom Klein. Factual and germane.
It is rather illuminating, given the discussion at hand, that women seek to denigrate your arguments by twisting the direction towards illogical and irrelevant areas. Many "non-single men" will attest to that phenomenon in their partners so it is not the preserve of "single men" to highlight it. The tactic proves that their argument cannot be supported by logic, alone.
Imagine if the study discovered that the human female was more evolved! I suggest that, in this age of male-bashing, the posts would be rife with women espousing the worthiness of the scientific study.

The Bible tells me that God says,"Let us make man in our image."And I believe that.I do not see any conflict there. He also created the animals to keep Adam company, but seen Adam was filled with aloneness,so he created Eve.Adam was a perfect. I don't have a problem with monkeys, neanderthals etc being creatures that God created to try and keep Adam company. To me they were seperate creations and did not evolve from each other.I won't say evolution is not real.Even mutation can be called a form of evolution.I have never seen one iota of proof that any species has ever evolved into another. That doesn't mean it hasn't happened. The same applies to the Bible.Either,Or or Both could be true or not.Neither disproves or proves the other. The more we dig up from the ground proves both so far.The more we study the stars proves both so far.But for man to look for the missing link is comparable to when God scolds Job in the book of Job asking do you know how I created the heavens and held back the water or hold the planets in place.X and Y evolution may very well be true but if you look for it across species, you will be decieved. The greatest deception Lucifer ever did was to make man believe he never existed.Psalms 14:1,"Only a fool says in his heart that there is no God."

The idea of more or less evolved is flawed from the start. That would infer that evolution is directional toward an ultimate goal. Just because a gene has changed more often than another, it doesn't make it any better or worse than any other.

The reason women haven't had equal rights and accomplishments in math, the sciences, inventions, and in the the arts until recently (?) in the Western culture at least is because they are the BACKWARD sex. Women STILL are second class in most of the world. Genes/evolution IS destiny. As Jane Austen, Madame Curie, and Emilia Earheart PROVE nothing kept women from making their mark if they had the talent, the guts, and were determined to DO IT. Tellingly, the proof is in the historical pudding.

Hey, the reason the Y chromosome is evolving so fast is that it's trying to CATCH UP with the X chromosome; The X was already pretty darn good 6 million years ago and didn't need to change and adapt as much! LOL

Suemag --- Sounds like it should be SueNag or Hag. A man scratches his balls and pees outside because we can. A woman would too is she didn't have to damned near disrobe to pee and if they had danglers they would scratch too.

See......testicle scratching is a highly evolved social action. But why am I trying to explain this to beings that are basically the evolutionary equivalent of having only just crawled out of the primordial ooze. Hehhehheh..........hang in there ladies..........they'll have a new study in a couple of months saying something different. Opps, gotta go now.....I've got an itch.........

As an educator, I will put this proven scientific fact on the internet. Since the late 70's, female students have continually scored higher on all standardized tests. We have always known that given half a chance, girls would be academically superior to male students. Today female students out perform male students over two to one. Girls are doing so well, that it makes boys look like they are falling behind rapidly. But when you look at all the data, it proves that females are superior to males academically and therefore smarter than males. Males are two to one physically stronger than females. But females are two to one smarter than males.

Adam is talking to God one day in the Garden of Eden. "God, I love this world you made but it's lonely". God replies "I will make you a companion and call her woman. She will be smart, funny, loyal....everything you could ever hope for in a mate but it will cost you an arm and a leg". Adam thinks for a moment and asks "what can I get for a rib???"

I will concede that men have come along way since making fire and inventing the wheel, but then again, this "research" emphasizes the advanced evolution of the Y chromosome (men)... compared to monkeys. I'm not sure I would gloat about this if I were a man, especially if I still drag my nuckles and prefer the grunt 'n point method of communication.
