What's this? Science has invented a dietary aid that doesn't involve surgery or gas with an oily discharge? Clearly, our interest is piqued.Swedish researchers have invented a device called the Mandometer, a portable interactive device that tells you when you are eating too fast by graphing how quickly food disappears from your plate. It's basically a scale that graphs the rate and amount of your eating against recommendations by a food therapist in real time. The Mandometer doesn't know what's on your plate -- it just encourages you to eat it slowly and in small portions, which, we hear, is half the battle. (The other half? KFC Famous Bowls.)
The research conducted showed the participants who used the Mandometer had significantly reduced their BMI compared to the participants who dieted using standard methods. After 12 months their portion size was also smaller, and the speed at which they ate decreased by 11 percent, as opposed to a 4 percent increase among standard dieters, suggesting long-term behavior changes and weight loss.
For now, scientists are saying more research is needed, and even when it's completed who knows if we'll be able to afford one. In the meantime, we'll just watch this on repeat.
