Sometimes we forget that our sweet ol' unsuspecting nanas were once young and fabulous -- back in the day, they, too, were downing champagne bottles and kissing boys at midnight, albeit probably in a much classier manner than we intend to do tonight. This year, we had Lemondrop readers ask their grandmas about their favorite New Year's Eve memories. From fond recollections of their childhood to unforgettable nights out on the town -- here are some of our faves!
Amber: "I had no date for New Year's Eve when I was 16. It has always been (and still is) my favorite holiday. I was crying and carrying on about it at home all week, totally depressed that I had no date and driving my father nuts. The day before New Year's Eve, a boy from my class came over and asked if I'd accompany him to a party the next evening, and I politely declined, as I couldn't let on that I was available just one day before the celebration! I closed the door and went back to weeping -- but my father chased the guy down the street and said, 'She can go with you! She doesn't have a date.' I was mortified but ended up going out with that guy and had a fabulous time."
Carlye: "When I was 17 years old in Chicago, there was a night club called the Chez Pierre. it was the ultimate, ultimate night club -- every movie star in Hollywood in the '40s and '50s went there. So, a boy took me out! It was extremely expensive -- the boy must have saved for five years! -- and we had the most wonderful time. We went backstage and I met my idol, the singing movie star, Tony Martin. That was the greatest night of all."
Gary: "As a child I can remember getting together with my grandparents to decorate the tree and listen to the radio. My favorite memory of New Year's was when my father used to make his own wine -- my brother would crush the grapes in his bare feet in the bathtub. This was back in the early 1900s or 1920s, and it was not easy to do since we had a very tiny apartment. I remember the mess it would make, but also the barrel of wine that my father used to make. I don't really remember making the wine, but I certainly helped drink it!"
Brittany: "This was at the very beginning of our marriage -- one New Year's after everybody left our house at the end of the night, your grandpa gave me a surprise stocking with jewelry in it! He continued the tradition every year after that. It was my absolute favorite! He was a good man -- always treated me wonderfully!"
Leah: "On New Year's Eve, the whole family would gather at my Grandmother's small apartment in Brooklyn. We would eat and eat and get to stay up late. That was a treat for us as kids. Then at midnight everyone in the apartment building would get their pots and wooden spoons and go outside and bang and clang away. We didn't have party favors or such. Then we would sleep over on chairs, the floor, whatever ... we were kids. I remember by Mom putting her fur coat on me for a blanket, and I could smell her perfume all night. Life was good and still is."
