Packing a bag for a few weeks away isn't easy. Just ask Alexandra Lawn and Rebecca Zeller of the dreamy indie-pop group Ra Ra Riot. Ra Ra Riot's front-women sat down with Lemondrop and revealed their tour-ready packing secrets and what they'll never wear onstage (again).Tell me about some of the items in your bags – which ones do you wear the most?
Rebecca Zeller: Most of my stuff is seasonal or for tour. Besides a few key items, I get really sick of my things because we're both basically pulling from the same variety of clothing for weeks or months at a time, so when its all said and done, you're like, "I'm gonna retire this for a while."
Alexandra Lawn: Yeah, they [have] to kind of be pretty basic overall in that sense, "What color do I feel like wearing ..."R: Or "I feel fat tonight, what's gonna hide me?"
Is there anything you've ever bought thinking, I'm totally going to wear this at a show, and now looking back on it, find it completely ridiculous?
R: Probably like, little jumpsuit onesie things. Those were pretty cute this summer, but it's just a little weird onstage for me.
A: Yeah, typically for me it's the strapless stuff. I always think it's so cute and I have to remind myself even when I'm not playing cello, I'm yanking on that thing all night long because it has no straps and I just get way too self conscious about it. Playing cello, sometimes it'll yank that thing down so hard! And I'm like, "I'm never going to do this again."
What would you say takes up the most space in your suitcase?
A: I've got 15 pairs of shoes.
No way! How do you cram them all in?
A: I have a secret stash under the fourth bench in the van. When we run out of room in our suitcases, we just hide things underneath the last bench ... I brought probably the most pairs of shoes I've ever brought on tour and I've probably worn the same pair.
Does it work the same for clothes – do you have one go-to outfit for wearing on tour?
A: Yeah, but you don't want it showing up in every picture. There was one tour a few years ago where my mom called me and was like, "If I see that dress on you one more time, I'm going to burn it." But you know, there are those dresses that you feel amazing in every time you wear it, and there's no question about it.
Do you guys have any stores that you absolutely have to stop at while touring?
R: I obviously love shopping, but the whole budget thing really kind of hinders that. In all the major cities there are some incredible boutiques, but the reality of going there and finding or being able to afford more than one thing is not really likely, and since we get sick of our stuff really easily, spending $150 on a dress is kinda stupid you only wear it once or twice. We had a really successful trip to Forever 21 in Chicago ... we've gotten pretty good at doing budget shopping but pairing it with more upscale items and kind of developing a style that way instead of "I can only shop at a fancy boutique".
A: Which is good because normally, no matter how well you try to take care of something in terms of clothing on tour, if you have a nice thing, like a really nice dress, its actually a stress to have. Odds are its going to get fucked up anyways. So, you know, being able to find cute clothes that aren't going to necessarily last long is perfect because by the time they're falling apart, you're sick of 'em.
