These days it's practically trendy to have lots of kids. Look at Brangelina. Or the Duggars. But a recent episode of WEtv's "Secret Lives of Women" focuses on the Quiverfull movement and shows the darker side of big, Quiverfull families.
As Kathryn Joyce, author of Quiverfull: Inside the Christian Patriarchy Movement, reveals in the episode, the movement began in the 1980s as a reaction to feminism. "Good" Christian women, many of them in the home-schooling community, embraced homemaking as their highest calling and left family planning in God's hands.
Says Rachel Scott, a mother of eight and grandmother of one who was featured in the episode, "I believe conceiving children and giving birth is an act of worship. You're submitting to God's goal for the planet and God's goal for you as a woman." She adds that women should submit to men, in her opinion.
But not all Quiverfull mothers are happy being submissive to God and their husbands. Although Vyckie Garrison was involved in the movement for 14 years, she divorced her husband and left the Quiverfull movement after her daughter attempted suicide.
"That was not part of what we had signed up for when we got into the whole Quiverfull belief," she explains in the episode. "We were a godly family. We were doing things God's way."
Garrison says that after that wake-up call, she apologized to her kids for putting God, her husband and the Quiverfull movement ahead of herself and her children. "Now I'm gonna put you guys first," she promised.
So who's right? Well, perhaps Garrison puts it best when she says, "there is no one-size-fits-all model" for families.

Now there's a foolish comment if ever I heard one. She actually apologized for putting God first? Putting aside the specifics of whether this was what she was actually doing, as a statement the best thing you can do is put God first. He can run your life better than anyone, including yourself. We are the ones who create the problems.

This really sounds like a cult. Real Christians do not believe that way. You can take 10 minutes out of your day to talk to God and have him be part of your life. The bible does not say you have to submit to a mans every whim to lead a "christian" life. Popping out babies one after another is not Gods "wish for the planet" as some want to put it. I think these people need to figure out how to get in touch with the way the rest of us worship God and appreciate religion.

Nice comment, Gigi.
Eric - Catholics are as much Christians as Methodists, Baptists, Lutherans, and UCC's. Part of the problem is our need to define how others connect with God. And, by the way, the KJV (King James Version) Bible is no more accurate than many of the translations available, in fact, its probably worse. Unless you can read Greek and Aramic/Hebrew you can't read even close to the "original". Did n't Jesus tell us to love God, and love each other as ourselves. I wouldn't want to tell you that the understanding of Christ you have that allows you to connect with God, I presume, was false, any more than I would expect you to be disrespecting of Catholicism. I am sure that I dissgree with both of these systems of Christianity, but honor the journey that people are on. Lets all work on that "love each other" part of the Great Commandment. Judge not, lest ye be judged.

I am homeschooler-not the quiverfull type. I am retiring as my last just entered college. This woman's problems have nothing to do with putting God first. She put quiverfull first and used their interpretation of what God wanted. What she discovered is the obvious in Scripture we are each unique and should live life that way. It wasn't her husband's fault either. They are partners, it was both. If she ignored her children that was never God's intent. He said if you hair one hair on these little ones you are accountable to him. She wanted a perfect life and thought this was the path. God doesn't promise perfection here on earth, what he does promise is grace, hope love and seeing you through the fires we will face here. Knowing he will never abandon or forsake us. We do not live in a world without trials. Our primary role as parents is mirroring that to our children. That is where she missed the boat, I'm just sorry that instead of bring them closer together as family by admitting their faults and changing. She abandoned her husband and her faith.

alysse ---- Not that I can agree about everything your saying, but I do agree with the jist of what you say.
This lady has been put into a situation, probably from fear and confusion that finally caused her to rebel. Maybe she has just decided that other peoples scare tactic and pressure just didn't work for her anymore. Maybe she decided that what people were telling her about what god wants, they themselves don't know what god wants.
I read all these inputs and hear a bunch of ideas of what god wants. My guess, most, are just mimicking what they've been taught by narrow views of some religious leader of some sort. Has god been talking to you all, with all these different ideas and directions. Oh I know, he talks to you in your heart. Well, maybe he talked to her in her heart. Are some of you wrong or are all of you wrong. I'm sure glad that the old testament god wasn’t talking to her, or half her children might not be alive anymore. Yeah, almost all these people are wrong, of course except you??

It's not putting God first where the problem lies. It's putting yourself first and pretending that you're doing God's will, when really you're only looking out for yourself and using Him as an excuse. If she really put God first in her marriage and relationship with her kids, she would have seen the signs of her daughter's depression and need for spiritual help before it got to the point of attempted suicide because she would have been paying attention to her kids and not just looking at them like living awards for mutliple labors. Raising a Christian family (large, small, whatever) isn't about popping babies out just because you can. It takes commitment, nurture, love, and trust in God. But it's not a reason to ignore the responsibility of your own actions and how that affects each of your kids.

So that's who's supporting Sarah Palin, mystery solved. I truly wish religious nuts lived by every statement and rule the bible makes. Their existence would be brief...but that is neither here nor there. Yes this planet is overpopulated but that isn't an issue either. I enjoy these stories...makes me appreciate life, common sense, and my freedom so much more. Barefoot and pregnant dealing with snotty nosed brats my whole life or traveling the world, enjoying my marriage with none of these mundane self inflicted concerns. Lastly none of these people better be on public assistance. They should just ask God for help instead of the taxpayers.

as catholics we have vocations and one of them is being a wife and mother. She doesn't seem like a good mother to me. its not the quantity of kids you have its the amount of good kids you raise in the world. and she should put God above everything else and not let herself be easily influenced that having many babies and just throwing them out there in the world is the right path to go towards God. Think! com on. abit of logic and have your own personality. to me she was just following that movement rather then God. and it true people see in the bible what they want to see.

It's a disgrace to our environment to not discourage McFamilies (families with five or more children. Waste disposal sites are overflowing. Groundwater is becoming polluted by chemical mixes of carcinogens washed from dumps into cummunity water wells. Emissions policies to significantly cut pollutants is meaningless if population doubles again in 50 years.
Whatever happened to ZPG?

Bill, bill, bill...you really should get an education before you spout things that have little or nothing to do with the other. "It's a disgrace to our environment to not discourage McFamilies (families with five or more children. Waste disposal sites are overflowing. Groundwater is becoming polluted by chemical mixes of carcinogens washed from dumps into cummunity water wells. Emissions policies to significantly cut pollutants is meaningless if population doubles again in 50 years." First the "evironment" doesnt care. It doesnt talk or anything. The problems you mention are again, problems in distribution rather than over population. But liberal programs force money that could help with those problems to other programs that liberal like. ZPG is a foolish idea, started by human beings who want humanity gone from the planet. The ultimate liberals...self haters.

She apologied for putting God before her family....?
Oops. Sorry, PC crowd, but God is supposed to come first...A #1...in everything. Ahead of yourself, ahead of your spouse, ahead of your kids...(oh noez, he said in front of your KIDS!!!)...yup. That's how it's SUPPOSED to work.
Putting God second...even after your precious little munchkins...is a disaster waiting to happen.
