The late Jerry Orbach might be best remembered for roles such as tough New York detective Lennie Briscoe on "Law & Order" or the man who tries to put Baby in a corner in Dirty Dancing, but who knew that he was such a romantic?Over the course of their 25-year relationship, Jerry wrote love poems to his wife Elaine. Now they're compiled in 'Remember How I Love You: Love Letters From an Extraordinary Marriage.'
Jerry would leave the short-but-sweet notes next to her coffee cup so that she'd have a "good morning poem" when she woke up.
(His tough "Law & Order" shooting schedule often required him to come home when Elaine was asleep, and he'd still be sleeping when she was awake.)
When Jerry died in 2004, a family friend asked to read some of the poems at his memorial service, and that's where the idea for the book took shape. It's a collection of the notes and Elaine's memories of life with Jerry.
Elaine passed away earlier this year right after the book was completed.
Here are a few examples of Jerry's pithy poems. If they don't melt your cold, black heart, nothing will.

I could not read Mr. Orbach's love poems. It would break my heart. After 43 years of marriage, my husband still leaves me a recorded love message on our radio/recorder. He wrote me love letters EVERY DAY before going to work at 5a.m. I saved many of them. There were hundreds. My husband is a tough, impatient and often angry man - but he always did and always does let me know how much he cares about me before he walks out that door.
I thank God for him - I must remember to appreciate it every day.

Great that Jerry was so devoted to his wife, which today is so rare. People take marriage and divorce for granted and are so ready to run for the fences at the first sign of stress, that the fact that he stayed devoted to her for so long speaks volumes to the level of class this man had. My only concern is if this is what he intended for pouring his heart out to his wife. I wonder how he'd feel about his innermost feelings being made into a book that some idiot critic is going to tear apart, just to get some press. There's always one who does. They're together again, in whatever afterlife there is. May they both rest in peace.

I'm a big Law & Order fan, and a big Jerry Orbach fan (he also played the candlestick in Beauty & the Beast!), and the very idea that this book exists almost made me cry. Or maybe I'm just hormonal. But this book sounds very touching. Ill have to check it out.

Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes they do - my fiance does this for me. He has a similar sense of humor. Except sometimes instead of written poems he'll make up songs and sing them on my voicemail when I'm at work or school.

Men like him DO exist.....I am marrying one this August!! Took 30 years for us to find each other and he's an incredible, sweet, supportive, encouraging, funny, intelligent, romantic man. He leaves little notes for me, surprises me with sweet things and we have deep conversations, he is chivalrous, I could go on and on. Please know that there ARE good, sweet men out there.....don't give up in finding the perfect one for you!

I met Mr. Orbach when I was 16yr old. I had crashed the set of a T.V. series he was filming at the VA in Long Beach. He was soo sweet and did not turn me in. Told me to sit quietly and I might learn something. :) It broke my heart when he pass away.

I loved Jerry and was so sad when he died! The poems just confirm what kind of man I always thought he might be. I always wanted to play Lennie Brisco's girlfriend on L&O even though he was old enough to be my dad....it would have been great fun..don't ya think?
