Sharks are smart -- even serial-killer clever -- and at a New Zealand aquarium, one of the animals actually performed emergency surgery.

A pregnant shark at Kelly Tarlton's Underwater World was discovered with a large wound in its side, apparently an injury sustained at the teeth of one of her tankmates. The shark was still alive, however -- as were four of her babies, who'd been delivered by this unusual Caesarean.

Click the link here to see the actual wound, and for your statistically unlikely phrase of the day -- "visitors came running to tell them there were baby sharks spilling from a wound in a female school shark's stomach."

Zookeepers say the babies were likely saved by the accidental operation, as if they'd been born at night and out of sight, they could have been eaten by other sharks.

We fell for the Montauk Monster. We wanted more than anything to believe in Balloon Boy. Finally -- we hope, anyway -- an Internet sensation we can believe in.
