I like wine. A lot. Some people might say too much, but those people are probably just concussed because I've punched them in the face. But I don't like when people make wine an inaccessible, elite thing, because drinking wine -- even when done responsibly -- should be fun. Bottlenotes is a wine Web site founded by two ladies, and it takes the wiener-measuring out of wine enthusiasm. It's an egalitarian, easy-to-use community that lets you build a profile based on what you like, find other people who have similar tastes. (Check out Gwyneth Paltrow's profile -- she likes fruity reds, which is unsurprising, given the whole Coldplay thing.)
It also includes a registry (so if you get engaged or your ex-boyfriend marries a paralegal, your friends can send you champagne), shopping guide and a list of events (like upcoming tastings in your area).
A lot of wine sites tend to be kind of monolithic in What You Ought to Be Drinking, but Bottlenotes sticks to the idea that good wine is the wine you enjoy. So everybody from my Yellowtail-loving aunt to my "chardonnay is for people who work with their hands" mother can find something they like. So, whether you want to know what next year's Casa Lapostolle is going to be, or you want to know what's under $12 and will go great with Pizza Hut bread sticks (seriously!), you can find it.
