It sounds like a bridezilla's worst nightmare: A Welsh couple found out their wedding cake was a fake made of polystyrene only after trying to cut into it at their reception. As bride Aimee West told the Daily Mail, "It was a lovely occasion and the ceremony was going to be the icing on the cake -- only there was no cake."
The snafu happened when West discovered four hours before the wedding that bakery Creative Cakes had forgotten to bake her cake. Creative promised to get West a cake in time for the ceremony.
They delivered it later, but it was the bride's mother who discovered the cake was a fake right as the couple was going to cut it.
The Wests, though disappointed, likely had a laugh and moved on with their ceremony. But shortly after their nuptials, they decided to take Creative Cakes to small-claims court to reclaim their deposit and gain compensation for their legal fees.
The court bid was successful, and the Wests were awarded £310 (about $511). The only hiccup seems to be that Creative Cakes maintains that the Wests knew that the cake was going to be a fake. As anyone who's seen "Cake Boss" or "Ace of Cakes" knows, there's no way to bake and ice a cake that big in a few short hours.
Polystyrene cakes, however, are a popular choice to save money -- and a lot of wasted cake -- at receptions nowadays. Why spend a few hundred dollars on something that won't get eaten?
They're known in the baking industry as "dummy cakes," and they can be all Styrofoam or part-cake/part-fake.
Tell us: Would you "serve" a dummy cake at your reception?

The same thing happened to me!! However, they DID have sheet cakes in the back ready to serve. I explicity told the head reception planner that the one thing I was firmly against was a fake cake. However, as we went to cut into our cake he ran up to us and told us that we couldn't cut the cake because it was fake. I still say looking back at our wedding that is what I am most upset about.

Fake Cakes are becoming very popular. Saves money and they can keep the cake. Sometimes the top tier will be fake with the bottom two or three tiers edible. My wife makes cakes and she gets equal business for fake cakes as she does for real cakes. www.lucianastreats.com

there is nothing wrong with having most of the wedding cake a fake. You can serve a homebaked cake and no one would be wiser. the cake looks beautiful but seldom gets eaten. It cost so much money and it gets wasted. Everyone for themselves, it is their day.

I understand the idea of a dummy cake & have no problem with that, but something I do is a bakery that forgets to make a cake and expects to keep the money for it. Yes, they did provide a dummy for the reception, but hey should have given some (most), if not all, of the money back for THEIR error.

I say NO to fake cake. As a professional decorator, it takes just as long to decorate a piece of styrofoam as it does real cake, so I wouldn't do it for any less than I would a real cake. The styrofoam dummes cost more than it does to bake a real cake. I cannot see how in the world a dummy cake could possibly be cheaper than a real cake. Then you add the cost of the sheet cakes on top of it. I have had a few inquiries about these dummy cakes and refuse to do them as I would charge MORE because of the labor involved and having to bake sheet cakes on top of that. It's absolutely rediculous! The "media" have been touting these dummy cakes for some time and many decorators get angry about it because this stuff is misleading. We have brides coming in thinking they can save so much money with fake cakes or sheet cakes and we are supposed to just decorate pieces of styrofoam to look like an elegant wedding cake for basically nothing. Not this baker!!! If you want cheap cakes, go to Wal-Mart!!!

They say why spend several hundred dollar's on a real cake and at the same time she sued and got her 500.00 dollar's back. That IS several hundred dollar's from where I came from.

My daughter's wedding cake was placed on a side table to make room for dancing. Some one noticed that the cake hadn't been cut until the last minute before the reception was over. The "Bride cuts the cake" ceremony was hurried and abbreviated. Unfortunately there was so much left over cake, most of it was disposed of. Wished we had a fake cake and saved all that money.

So, this would be the updated meaning of 'can't have your cake and eat it too.'
