The mighty New York Yankees became the world champions of baseball again last night when they beat the Philadelphia Phillies. It was the first championship in their brand-spanking-new stadium, and I'm basking in the glory of the victory of my adopted city. So why the eff did Mary J. Blige wear her sunglasses while singing the National Anthem? She sang the Star-Spangled Friggin' Banner while wearing sunglasses ... AT NIGHT!
There's a whole stadium of men and women with their hats off of their heads and over their hearts, and then there's Mary J. Blige wearing sunglasses.
It was a bad artistic choice in my opinion, one with no respect for the men and women who have died for that song and what it represents. Mary J. Blige just had to look cool for her fans. The sun was not shining in her face, and it was night time.
Heck, the players play all night long in those conditions without sunglasses. They can look up in the sky and catch a fly ball with no problem at all!
I find it hard to believe that she needed them to sing the song. Her eyes weren't burning, she just needed to look cool. It's so uncool.
Here's another anthem complaint of which Mary is also guilty: When you sing the national anthem, you don't have to fluctuate your voice at weird times to put your mark on the song. It's the "Star-Spangled Banner," it doesn't need your vocal bravado to be beautiful.
The song is actually more profound than your distracting vocal choices and should be appreciated for what it is. Show some respect.
I sound like an old lady, don't I?
Yankees are #1!

You don't think it's a bit over the top to call her wearing sunglasses during your national anthem an "abomination", guys? Seriously? Gun violence, drugs, homelessness, soaring crime rates, domestic abuse... whatever. Sunglasses during the national anthem??? OMG. It's unAmerican, right? Get over yourselves and find something REAL to be horrified by...

GIVEN THAT MARY J IS AN ENTERTAINER - WEARING SUNGLASSES IS PART OF HER "COSTUME". SHE IS RENOWN AS A SOULFUL SINGER AND HAS A HISTORY OF TELLING IT LIKE IT IS, WITH INTEGRITY AND DRAMA ... I GREW TO LOVE HER SINGING BUT I CAN APPRECIATE THAT SHE IS DIFFERENT AND HER STYLE MAY TAKE PEOPLE BY SURPRISE.. I AM PRETTY SURE SHE DIDNT MEAN TO OFFEND ...GEES!

For all we know, she had a headache or cold or something. When I have a bad sinus headache, sometimes lights bug me. A hat is disrespectful. Getting angry at sunglasses seems kinda like we're reaching.

It seems as if you 7 are the only ones complaining about Mary's performance. The Yankees didn't seem to have a problem with it. I am not even a Yankees fan, but she did the song justice. The glasses weren't disrespectful, your attitude is criticism I find is. Be proud that someone sung the National Anthem with heart, soul and passion, To the chick that claims she may have been high, Mary doesn't indulge in drugs. You may do seeming as you know the cover-ups of being high . . . oh yeah that's right, she took them off in the middle of the song . . . guess you missed that part! You people are atrocious and demeaning, and the sad part is that even looking in the mirror you can't figure that out!!!

I thought i was pretty good. mary is a wonderful singer who fell through some hard times in her life and came back and turned her music into a lesson for many young ladys to learn from. I see both sides as far as the glasses go but if anyone really knows mary knows thats her style. look if it was that serious im pretty sure they would have told her she had to take them off. they didnt she sang whats the problem. also i can tell theres not many people on here who knows about soul singing. Thats what shes about not saying the words to a song but living it out through her emotions as she sings and to me thats a true singer. so it is whatit is jump off hers whoever didnt like because guess what shes still making money everyone knows who she is the question is who really knows the haters lol

Wow. Way to be racist.
Wearing sunglasses during the national anthem is possibly disrespectful, but it in no way excuses your hateful comments. As far as I know, America is the land of the 'free' and its people take pride in their rights and these freedoms. So by that logic, your comments and racism goes against what America stands for and I'm sure this is more disrespecting to the nation than some sunglasses.

Get a life already, people!! The disrespect to America is your ignorance, your idiocy, your laziness (if you'd actually work or had something to do, you would not to have to invent these conspiracy theories), well, sometimes your obesity adds to the shame. It's definitely not Mary J. Blige wearing sunglasses.

You must be white. Wearing sunglasses is NOT disrespecting anyone you dumb fuck. PLENTY of people have worn sunglasses while singing the national anthem you dumb freak. Mary is the QUEEN and she could wear a bathing suit and sing it if she want to. Deal with it. And why are you talking about something that happen about a month ago? Where is the logic bitch?Mary sounded absolutely AMAZING and she made the sorry ass Yankees win. SO if they not complaining why is a broke bitter piece of shit like you complaining? And to all the followers, get a LIFE! NONE of you have record deals nor can sing like her to criticize anything. DIE OFF!

Mary J. Blige is "The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul" and has earned her fan base on her realness... That's why America fell in love with her when she belted out "NO MORE DRAMA" so for you to sit up and criticize something as little as sunglasses shows how SHALLOW you are. And as far as her vocal accept it or kick rocks. If you want my honest opinion, you and everybody who has the time to talk negatively against this woman shows that you have issues within yourself. She gave her whole heart singing that song which shows her RESPECT for her country!!!

I've seen her name, but never heard her sing. I usually don't care for "soul" versions of standard songs: too many roulades, variations, twists and turns on the melody that make the original almost unrecognizable. But I heard in her version that those variations, etc., were kept to a bare minimum (usually at the ends of phrases and lines). It was a very dramatic rendition, despite the pauses within words, at syllable breaks, for taking a new breath, which interrupted the flow of the melody. But I was indeed impressed with her apparent dedication to the song and its meaning. As for the sunglasses, they didn't bother me. And those aren't sunglasses that Stevie Wonder wears; he's blind. I don't know if he's 100% blind, but his eyes may be very sensitive to light, so he must wear dark glasses perhaps for comfort's sake. Further, she did remove the glasses at one point towards the end of the song, as only one other correspondent noted. By the way, another correspondent wrote that the SSB was written by a Brit. True -- while the words were written by an American, Francis Scott Key, the melody is that of an old British drinking song, "Anacreon in Heaven." Key's poem was set to the song later. Oh, yes -- I'm white, and I prefer classical music.

I'm sorry but she defiantly did take the glasses off. and your the only i hear of complaining about this. even if she did wanna look good for her fans she sure as hell pulled it off and secondly all artist advertise something or the other when performing and seeing that she has her own line of shades coming out Melodies i don't see the issue with it.
