Much like the women of "Melrose Place," the female fiddler crab likes to have sex with all of her neighbors. At first researchers weren't sure whether the fiddler crab's unusual habit of doing it with her neighbors above ground (crabs typically mate in burrows) was a friends-with-benefits kind of thing or what, but now it has become apparent that female fiddler crabs get humpty with their neighbors in exchange for protection from intruders. Scientists figure that's why male fiddler crabs like to have female neighbors -- because they will totally do it with them. In exchange, boy crabs will go into battle with male intruders 95 percent of the time.
Let's see -- doling out beatings in return for sexual favors ... this kind of makes male fiddler crabs the pimps of the animal kingdom, right? Makes sense, considering how totally awesome a purple fur coat would look next to their big, orange, fightin' claw.
