We knew some good had to come from a life of watching bad crime-investigation shows. Fortunately, the story at Newfield High School in Selden, N.Y., was more "CSI" and less "The Wire." Seventeen-year-old Tiana Rapp had lost nearly $200 to a thief who was pilfering students' lockers. High school authorities were putting the blame on a student, but something just didn't sit right with the senior, who loves to sit around and watch "CSI."
She and her lockermate decided to take matters into their own hands and -- inspired by the high-tech sleuthing on her beloved forensics show -- set up a secret surveillance camera in their locker. Twelve minutes into the tape the adult hall monitor Linda Cubano, 54, was recorded rifling through Rapp's belongings, looking for more cash.
After taking the tape to the principal, Rapp, an aspiring forensic scientist, finally got to see some action -- Cubano was charged with three counts of petty larceny and issued a desk ticket. Thanks, David Caruso!

Maybe she just has common knowledge of todays technology, thats not something very hard to believe, in fact many people set up hidden surveillance systems way before csi, but NONE THE LESS it was a great job done! It made me happy to hear this story! =]

I believe setting up a camera in a locker room is a crime.

The thief was "Issued a desk ticket"? What the hell is that? If she is on video stealing money out of lockers, why hasn't she been issued a dismissal slip from her job?

How great that these girls solved a crime for which a fellow student had been accused. The school officials should be ashamed that they weren't as proactive as these students,
I loved the original CSI from the beginning and still enjoy it. I can;t take CSI Miami seriously. Not because of the episodes, but David Caruso cracks me up. I just can't watch him and take him seriously. Talk about the little man complex, he reeks with it. The directors play this up as well as when they show him riding up on a big boat, one hand on his hip, starring intently ahead. I laughed do hard I almost fell off my chair. At first I thought this show was meant to be a parody of the original.. Then learned it was suppose to be as serious as the original. It's a shame that Caruso's acting kills the seriousness of the drama. His supporting cast is super and the deserve so much more. I had to stop watching it once I realizes we were suppose to take that little man seriously. He stinks.

DESK TICKET IS JUST THAT-YOU ARE GIVEN A SUMMONS TO APPEAR IN COURT ON A CERTAIN DAY. YOU ARE NOT ARRESTED.

Big Wow! What ever happened to throwing thief's in jail? Must we be politically correct and handle criminals with perverted liberal justice? Remember folks, it is more important to preserve the rights of the criminals than their victims. A good liberal lawyer will say the girls that left the cash in their locker are at fault and caused this hard working woman to be tempted unjustly and therefore should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law on the grounds of intentional entrapment via the installation of the surveillance camera. Also dear Ms. Cabano should be compensated for the stress she has suffered because of this unjust charge which was caused by the actions of these girls to intentionally leave the cash as the bait of the entrapment.

There are hundreds of school employees sitting around doing nothing in NY. They can't fire them because of the unions! She'll get a slap on the wrist, then be off to play on a computer in the rubber rooms with the rest of the thieves, bad teachers, and abusers. Great Job NY! Your unions are really working for you huh?

These people that the female took advantage can and should report this to the authorities of the city and county where it took place. Then she should have all the victims file a civil suit against her. So many thieves are getting away with crime that it won't stop until "we the people" make it stop. Also take the film to a television station. They love that sort of stuff. Also hit the local newspapers. Put up a FUSS, Loud and Clear.

A desk ticket is not like getting a speeding ticket or a minor violation. Getting a desk ticket means you HAVE been arrested but that the officer has deemed your crime not worthy of being taken in with handcuffs. It is sometimes given for minor misdemeanors. So instead of being held in jail until your arraignment, you are set "free" on a promise to appear in court on the date specified on the ticket. But you are not really "free" because if you dont appear you get into lots n lots more trouble. It just means you dont have to go to jail right then.

Nice work. I know that the school will tell you that leagaly your locker is only "yours" "with respect to other studnets". But, if an adult employee is flat out stealing, you deserve better protection. Nice work ladies!
