Imagine a place where you could reveal your deepest, darkest secrets without fear of judgment. Frank Warren did, and with that in mind he created the blog PostSecret in 2004. It's a site that posts the handmade postcards readers mail to him with a never-before-told secret written on it. Now he's one of Forbes.com's top Web Celebrities of 2009, and his fifth book "POSTSECRET: Confessions on Life, Death, and God" has just been published. We thought we'd ask him a few questions on his inspiration, his new book -- and what makes for good secrets.
So your fifth book "POSTSECRET: Confessions on Life, Death, and God" was just released a few days ago. Sounds like some heavy stuff.
Yeah, ha, it's got secrets that are silly, sexual, hopeful, and heartbreaking. They're secrets more of a spiritual nature, though -- secrets that reveal our deeper connection with a higher power. One of them is a picture of a church steeple and it says, "I am too much woman for all the pansy ass guys at church."
POSTSECRET: Confessions on Life, Death, and God
He may not have known it at the time, but Frank Warren started a movement in 2004 with his website, PostSecret.com. The idea was to invite visitors to anonymously hand make postcards with a secret on it. They would then send said postcard to Warren, who collected them all and posted some selections on the site every week. The only real rule is that the secret must be true and can't have ever been told before. The phenom grew, and soon Warren was holding art openings featuring select postcards and gathering them together for bestselling books.
On Tuesday (Oct. 6th), Warren released the newest book in this community art project. Lemondrop has a few of the images that are showcased in the book to share with you here.

Where did you get the idea for PostSecret?
The idea was to create a safe, non-judgmental place for people to share the things they aren't usually comfortable discussing or sharing.
And about how many submissions per week do you receive and how do you choose which ones get posted?
I get about 1,000 secrets per week, and I post about 20 every Sunday. I look for a ring of authenticity and real human emotions. Every week there are secrets that might make you laugh or make you cry. I try to tell a story with the secrets.
What do you think makes PostSecret so popular?
It's the sense of authenticity. There's not many places where strangers can share this kind of vulnerability.
I know there's been a music video -- do you have any other plans for PostSecret, aside from the Web site and the books?
What I've been doing more of lately is going to schools and talking about it. Sharing the secrets and showing them on a screen behind me. And more and more students have been standing up afterward and sharing their secrets, which is very personal, and can be very ... emotional.
It must be a lot more challenging to in a non-anonymous atmosphere.
I think young people feel more comfortable talking about parts of their lives their parents never would have discussed.
Do you have a favorite PostSecret?
There was one that was sent in on a Starbucks cup. It said, "I give decaf to customers who are rude to me."
That's funny -- I used to work in a coffee shop and I would do the exact opposite. I would give regular coffee to people who ordered decaf, which is so terrible.
Oh, really? I'll have to remember that. Wow, learned something new today. I bet a could get a few good postcards from you.

I'll bet that once a particular beautiful 45 year old Registered Nurse, who works in Oakland/Pittsburgh, Pa., finally goes and confronts her so called "father" who has been screwing her up until 5 years ago (!!!) then she will begin to stop ignoring the true love of a man who loves her dearly and has been trying to help her in every way possible. Her so called "father" is now hiding "behind the Lord" with all of the usual crap that a piece of human scum does when they know it is time to "pay the piper" and she is trapped by believing his so called "contrition". I would like to personally deal with the piece of human scum, slithering around in Arkansas right now, and just beat his scum ass until it is necessary to start CPR. She is so beautiful, but so psycho due to the abuse that has been levied on her. Right, Markell, you piece of puke!!!???

Actually God is always ready to listen to your confession ..He will even forgive you and not judge you!! And best yet if you proclaim your belief and love for his son..You will go to heaven...Here on earth you get to feel love and peace knowing that you are loved and accepted by the creator himself!!

Catholics have the confessional and it works! When you have a stomach ache, you go to your doctor. When you have a toothache, you visit your dentist. When you have a soul ache, as a Catholic, you go into the confessional where the rite of reconciliation takes place between you and God with the priest giving absolution in His Name.
BTW, good practicing Catholics are very seldom seen in a psychiatrist's office. This has been verified in studies done by outstanding researchers.

TO CHLOE:
I have a question.....since "Good" Catholics are almost never seen in psychiatrists offices, where exactly do you think those poor young church members who were Sexually molested by those same Sin-Confession hearing Priests go? Just for kicks and giggles, who do you think hears their pain?
Chloe…I hope your post was satire. I would to think a person could be as asinine as your post makes you out to be.

Chloe, I am glad you take confession seriously. However, I go the biblical route and go straight to God. Because of what Jesus did on the cross, I don't need a person to mediate for me (and neither do you). I grew up Roman Catholic and understand the tradition of the confessional. I merely prefer to go straight to the person who grants forgiveness, God.

Chloe,,we are not to confess to man, the Bible say,s if we confess to God and repent he will forgive our sin,s,,no man can forgive sin,all you need is God.

Shame is a central theme in Catholisism.
THATS WHY ALL THE MOLESTED CHILDREN DON'T GO TO PSYCHIATRISTS!

Chloe: I was baptized Catholic as an infant but never went any further until ten years ago when my husband and I joined the Church. I had tried many other faiths and had been in therapy, some very good, some not. You are right: Confession does work and it doesn't cost anything but a prayer or two. I was SO scared of my first confession but I felt like a burden had been lifted from me. Peace be Wtih You!

It's sad not that people have to tell strangers these things but that everyone nowadays feels compelled to tell anything at all. Why are we such a nation of blabbermouths? Why do we think we're so important and everything we do of such interest to everyone else? What ever happened to writing in a diary and keeping it under lock and key? Bottom line: We're all struggling; we all have hopes, dreams and tragedies; and we all need to take care of ourselves, nurture one another, go forth and do no harm. In the meantime, can't we shut up???!!!

, nurture one another,
whats wrong with wanting to tell someone your secrets? if it helps you cope with it, if you need nurturing, why is that bad?
sometimes secrets are good to keep, and sometimes they can eat you alive

What's the use of telling a secret, anonymously of course, then have that secret disclosed (anonymously, of course) by someone who "had the idea of creating a safe, non-judgmental place for people to share the things they are usually uncomfortable discussing or sharing"? The only one benefiting here is this "genius" of a moron people tell the secret to $$$$$$$$$$$$ ! People are so stupid!

I don't understand the venom. I wish I was that kind of "genius" moron. (That would be an OXYmoron btw. )
Sometimes it makes a person feel better if they can unburden themselves of their secret...it is like confession for Catholics....it's not about the penance....it is about letting go to another human who is not (unlike you) judging you.
And sometimes people just want to be PART of something.

All I know is that whether someone else is benifiting from this or not it is benefiting those who tell as their secrets as well.Have you not ever had a secret that you just couldn't keep to yourself??Everyone has a secret they have not told and I mean everyone...and sometimes a confessional does not work at church as some have stated because you know who you are telling and you have the fear of them recognizing you and having someone you know tell your secret. The main point is we want to be free of our secrets but not a diary nor a priest will help with this cause it is not released it is just set into your own hands or into the hands of another. What we all want is to set our secrets free and never have to look back and think "wait what if someone finds out because they told?" or "what if someone finds my diary and reads my secret?" All I know is that what this site is doing is actually making people feel more secure and safe about their secrets and about the people who will or won't know because no one will ever know it is you.All that is known is that your secret is told, you have a weight lifted off your shoulders and maybe one day because of this relieving you will be able to tell the person you are closest to and it will be done. But for now lets just agree that secrets may drive us crazy if we suffocate ourselves with them and sometimes all we need is just to release them in a way we know that they won't come back to haunt us in our lives 'till we decide to speak of them once more.
