Set your DVR -- "My Monkey Baby," a TLC special that debuted on Sunday, goes inside the lives of childless couples who adopt monkeys and raise them like human offspring. Okay. We know people like to treat their pets like kids, but this is just ridiculous: an estimated 15,000 monkeys are getting the human treatment in the United States alone. Parents of so-called "monkids" love their primate babies because you can put them in diapers, bottle-feed them, crochet little hats for them, and they will never suddenly start locking their door, blasting Ministry and hating you for no apparent reason. It is this presumed precociousness, that often leads people who either can't have children or don't want human kids to adopt a baby monkey.
Jim Johnson, one monkey dad covered in the show, remarks, "If I hear somebody call her a monkey, I throw a fit. She is my daughter, 100 percent." Except that most kids probably won't brutally attack you if you touch their peanuts, as was the case with monkey mom Angelle Samprey.
It's a good thing there aren't over half a million kids in foster care who could ... wait, what's that? Oh, there are? Well, those foster care kids hate it when you call them names like "Silly Willy" and "Butters," so monkey babies it is!

Get your Facts correct. The animal in CT which tore the face off a woman was a CHIMP not a MONKEY. I live in CT so I KNOW THE FACTS. I would have a Monkey before a KID any day. Kids are awful and many grow up and Kill their parents even when the parents have been good decent parents.

A primate is a primate...So glad I do not live in Conn. Do all folks in your state feel as you do? You may know a monkey from and ape, however, your perspective on humans/children is rather scary. Did you kill your parents? What a sad commentary on mankind you have made!

I watched the show and while it was creepy and the humans were certifible crazy, it was a far better show that the crazier people who "adopt" the child-like DOLLS and treat them like babies. At least the people with the monkeys actually have some to feed and take care of. The crazies with the dolls spend thousands of dollars on clothes, cribs, strollers, etc. on a DOLL. I'M NOT SURE WHICH SHOW WAS THE CRAZIEST.........I REALLY THINK IT WAS THE ONE ABOUT THE DOLLS. I do like monkeys but I'm not doing to adopt one and dress it up like a baby. The last I saw of the program was the woman who took her monkey baby, kissed her husband and he went to one bedoom and the woman and monkey went to another........SO WRONG......SO WEIRD!!!!!!!!!

I think it is cruel to the monkeys. However, I am not so sure having kids is a great idea either.

Well there not that far off of human children , So they have to worry about getting there face ripped off , If they were real kids they would have to worry about them shooting them to death . Without seeing it coming.

Did anyone but me notice that some of the women owning these monkeys, all had some "issues" with their children. I mean they had not seen them for several years, etc. These monkeys are cute, but the money they spent on them and buing them could have been put to so much better use!!!!
Get a grip, people!

Shame on you TLC -- did anyone of your staff, Producers, writers ask yourselves why do these people do this? Do you have any idea the restrictions/rules the qualifications on adopting from our Country. The idea of the birth mother and sperm donor father being able to come back and say I have changed my mind I want my child back? What dooes the adoptive parent then say what rights do they have after they have fallen in love with this child. Then the ridiclous expense that it is. I could certainly come up with $15,000.00 a lot easier than say the $30,000.00 to $60,000.00 it costs to adopt from another Country.
How dare you mock people that are just trying to fill a void.. Shame on you and anyone else that has a problem with it.

I went into this show thinking "crazy." I came out of it thinking, "Crazier!" At times it was so amazingly absurd, it could have been fiction. This is bad reality tv.

I am an adoptive Mom of a beautiful son. I fought hard to adopt him for 3 years. I was first his foster mom. I was in court every 4 weeks and had to deal with the frustration and heartache of "the system" and would do it all again for him. This being said I am actually extremely insulted by this show. I too am an animal lover but this is obsurd......

A little education in zoology is needed folks as I see the chimpanzee case was mentioned as a reason for people not to adopt monkeys. Chimpanzees are NOT monkeys; they are a member of the Hominidae family, also known as Great Apes, along with gorillas, orangutans and yes, us humans. NONE of the first three should ever be kept as a pet; their strength when angered is terrifying, hence the disaster in CT. On the TLC show, all the creatures were monkeys; largely capuchins and spider monkeys. They are smarter than a lot of people and are being trained as companions to disabled persons due to their ability to complete tasks as well as provide lively and enjoyable companionship. Some of these posts are very mean-spirited and show your ignorance and judgmental attitude. Next time, get your facts straight before you post as well as remember, it's their lives and their business. What's it hurting you?
