Claire Standish was the reigning princess of "The Breakfast Club" -- and had the WASP-y retro look down pat. She embodied the subtle side of the '80s: No leg warmers, no off-the-shoulder Day-Glo tees, no acid-washed denim jackets. Her look was tweed skirts paired with feminine blouses (preferably in pink), topped off with preppy riding boots. We wanted some tips on how to re-create her style, so our fashion expert Brian dug around to find some Claire-worthy pieces available right now. Brian says: Claire's style is right on-trend this season. She mixed textures and colors for a truly one-of-a-kind look. The key here is not to go overboard. (No rolled sleeves, please.) Pick modern pieces with interesting details that reference her teen-queen style: a satin blouse paired with a menswear-inspired skirt is reminiscent of Claire's look without being too costume-y.

A bold fuchsia blouse like this one by Newport News is ladylike and eye-catching. The rich color is perfect for fall. (Just throw a cardigan over it if you get cold.)
Instead of plain pencil skirt, find one that has interesting detailing. I love this one by Vivienne Westwood because it has a fantastic origami-style fold in the front.
Riding boots are always in style and this pair by Nicole is priced right. Wear a pair of patterned tights under them to give the look some extra interest.
Finally, finish off with a pair of classic pearl studs like these from Dillard's. They're freshwater, so they won't break the bank. (We won't tell, either.)
