Zapatero Daughters Bring Darkness to White House
How much do we love this amazing photo from the State Department's Flickr feed? It shows Barack and Michelle Obama with Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and his 13- and 16-year-old daughters, clearly enjoying a healthy goth phase. Laura, Alba, we feel your pain; being a teenager sucks.

I'm so glad my awkward teen goth phase wasn't photographed and sent all over the world!

I am goth/punk and have been for 20 yrs. There is nothing to be ashamed of as long as you are being true to yourself. Picture wise if I had some I would post them. My parent wouldn't take any of me if i was dressed punk or goth. Now after 20 yrs of torturing and damaging my hair I have stopped wearing Mohawks and coloring my hair different colors but I still occasionally color my hair black and i wear nothing or burgundy and black all the way down to my combat boots. i never hide my many tattoos. i am proud to be myself and not conform to what society expects me to be .

LunaDusk,
It's awesome that you've chosen not to conform. Now go get me a double latte with a touch of hazel nut, dear. The big people have to work now.

If you've been goth for 20 years, it's time to move on and live in the now. Or risk being like my old hippy Uncle Joe.

Yeah, yeah, blah,blah...you're just as much a conformist as anyone else.Do you know how many conform to your uniform worldwide? In the hundreds of thousands at least. You are even more of a conformist because you're stuck in this look for twenty years! So much for being a Non-conformist!!!!!!!!!! Oh,you make me laugh!!!!Go on with your Halloween makeup, some of it is creative, but most just make me think its a cry for help. I think of your genre as neglected and spoiled people(you're not kids anymore) who are too lazy to do anything else but to self adorn and walk around like, what are you looking at??!!! GET A LIFE.

Good For You! I'm 42 and don't dress my "age" as my mother brings up enough. Freedom of expression is a good thing, and that Jack A$$ who made the coffee comment, I am in IT and make a good living thank you very much. Sorry Im not into the Gap or Abercrombie shit. Be your own person, wear what you want to wear and be your own person. If in 40 years Im still looking the same and Im happy I dont care if Im like your Uncle Joe the old hippy is... if he is happy then thats all that matters.

I don't think Goth is always awkward.

It's true that Goth isn't always awkward- many times people (and I myself) fall in love with it because of the grace and beauty we see in others who have perfected those qualities in a dark way.... The social dimensions are extremely appealing also.
It's just hard for a beginner to put together the goth look in an elegant way (or in whatever subculture-look they wish to participate in).
As for what I was originally going to comment.....:
Those girls look a little on the unhealthy side. I'm sure their parents can afford to keep a gym membership and a nutritionist. What gives?

this is ridiculous and rude. they are Spanish - they tend to wear a lot of black and punk is very popular.

This is really pathetic and ignorant in the extreme. Politicians children are not and should not be exploited. What is truly GROSS about this ridiculous "story" is that the photo should never have been posted due to the age of the children involved. Who the hell cares what they dress or look like. We don't know them or what their lives are like and it is NONE of our business. The photo was pulled and the fact that it is shown here for the purpose of openly mocking young women should be tangible proof for all as to why the rest of the world hates us. We are ignorant opportunists with no respect for other cultures and most especially for young women. Shame on you Emily McCombs, you are a vibrant representation of Madeline Albrights assertion that there "is a special place in hell for women who do not help other women". Mocking teenage girls is NOT cool

I see some people getting worked up about the "exploitation" of these girls and what I find most pathetic about it is that many of these same people had no problem with it when Sarah Palin's family and children were viciously dragged through the mud by the media. The hypocrisy of it is disgusting. "Oh we don't know these people, it isn't right to judge. The children shouldn't be exposed to this" (but, it's O.K. as long as it's the children of a Republican.)

I have just one question? Wants the hole point in the Spanish Prime Minister daughters coming to the White House. we already know that the White House is satanic. And no I don’t mean that just because Obama is in there. Am just saying.

I do think the goth look can be pretty cool (depending on the person and how they make it look on them.) And although I don't see anything wrong with it, I can't help but laugh at the irony behind the concept. Most goths look and dress the way they do because they are trying to be individuals and/or non-conformists, when in actuality, they are every bit as much conformists as the people they are trying to set themselves apart from. "If you want to join the non-conformists, all you have to do is dress like us and listen to the same music we do." Hilarious.
