On Monday a woman in Indonesia broke her country's record for fattest baby, popping out a whopper of a kid who weighed a little over 19 lbs. Sounds like double congratulations are in order ... and some painkillers. The woman, who had previously had three children with a traditional midwife in attendance, was escorted to the hospital when complications arose in her pregnancy, which was nine months along.
The doctors performed a Caesarian section and pulled out the 19.2-lb. baby boy. Doctors are saying the baby is healthy, although his crying is unusually loud, and his apparent love for food has traveled with him out of the womb. Binsar Sitanggang, one of the attending gynecologists, described it as "almost non-stop feeding."
The baby is probably the size it is because his mother is diabetic, a condition which could have raised her glucose levels and thereby the baby's, giving him more sugar than he needed and making him grow like a superhero fetus.
Although the largest surviving baby in the world weighed 3 lbs. more than this fellow, topping the scales at 22.44 pounds, let's not kid ourselves: This baby is huuuuuge. How huge? Here are some other things that weigh approximately the same as Indonesia's Jumbo Baby.
One of those ungodly gigantic sacks of potatoes that are so big you wonder who buys them.
A car tire. That's right. An actual car tire.
If you had four 5-lb. bags of sugar, and your neighbor borrowed about 2 cups, the remainder would equal Gigantor Child.

I personally think this article is out of line. Comparing someones NEWBORN BABY to a car tire? bags of sugar and potatoes??? I'm sure this woman had a rough pregnancy, but I'm sure she loves this baby just the same. This article was just plain insensitive.

They only compared for size reference, to show just how big he was...they didn't say he was a tire...

Wow. Can't believe the ignorance of some of you people. Just because mom has diabetes doesn't mean the baby will. My mom had diabetes when she had me and I was over 13lbs at birth. Now I am a perfectly healthy, perfectly height/weight proportionate adult. My brother is the same as me. Neither one of us has diabetes or a weight problem. Nothing "unethical" about diabetics having babies. AND since mom has diabetes she can't simply "control" her blood sugars and did you examine the babies pancreas?! Diabetes is more often than not genetic or gestational. Not necesarily something the mom brought on herself. Also DUH the article says the mom HAS diabetes so I am fairly certain she doesn't need to be checked for it! UGH!!! Educate yourselves people!!!

The baby will likely be fine if able to get over any breathing problems from the excess weight. I delivered a 12 lb baby due to diabetes. Around 6 months of age we were in the clear with the breathing issues. She was petite as a toddler and is in normal weight range now at age 7.

I agree I feel sorry for the kid. Hopefully his size is something that can be kept under control from here on out, and he get eventually get to where he should be weight wise. I'm sure it'll even itself out before too long. But his huge, abnormal appetite could be worrisome. Definitely don't want him to have to go through life with a weight problem if something can be done about it early on.
The mother must have thought she was having twins or something! Did she not noticed how much bigger than normal she was? Or how much more she weighed? Crazy

Actually, I had gestational diabetes and delivered a healthy 11lb 2oz baby girl vaginally. Just so you know it does not necessarily mean you gain abnormal amounts of weight or are huge, I was the same size (my abdomen) as with my previous pregnancies, and I didn't gain an ounce of weight. Not every pregnancy is the same so you shouldn't generalize. My daughter lost some of the weight from the pure sugar she was getting throughout the pregnancy then leveled out. Today she is a healthy 3yr old and very skinny (I might add). I followed a strict (Dr. prescribed)diet because of the diabetes (as you can tell by my lack of weight gain), but because your body is either not making insulin or not making enough for both you and the baby the baby gets too much sugar through the placenta. I was very well informed when diagnosed and would like to point out that it happened well into the pregnancy so it was not that I made some callous decision to harm my baby it is just the course that pregnancy took.

Bull shit! I do NOT believe the picture is that of a new born.
So sorry, but no way. I've given birth to 3 babies, had typical pregnancy issues, and there is no way I believe an Indonesian woman could birth a 19 pounder. Look at the genetic size of the nationality,,,

Why do some of the people bother to comment on a story they obviously didn't read? Do some of you people just look at the pictures and not bother to actually read the words or what? It clearly stats the mother was/is diabetic it clearly says it was a c-section delivery.
While there is a possibility the mother passed on diabetes to the baby there was nothing saying he is or will remain diabetic and more than likely just like babies that are born small at birth he will eventually level out at a normal weight.

Thank God, she was able to get to a hospital and see a doctor to help her!
I hope she gets help for her diabetic condition, and the baby will receive the treatment it desperately needs.
This family is in need of help from others more fortunate. May God comfort , aid, and watch over this family.

I was gestational diabetic and my son only weighed 5 lbs, 10 oz. So not all diabetics give birth to large babies.

gestational diabetes is not the same as diabetes mellitus which is what people have their entire lives. gestational is a temporary side effect of some women who become pregnant. nope not the same thing.

I think with that kind of comment, you need to take the "bi" out of your screen name.
