Before you fill out your nomination for Teacher of the Year, you should hear about Jennifer Mazzotta-Perretti, who donated a kidney to one of her students. We think she's got this year's vote locked up. On September 3, the Long Island woman gave one of her kidneys to a former pupil. (Not even a real fall or spring semester student, but a summer creative-writing class student. Nuts, right?)
The tale began a few years ago during a class discussion about doing good deeds. Kevin O'Brien, now 19, asked his then-teacher Jennifer, "Would you give life to someone else if you didn't have to give up your own? She said yes, she would.
Then he asked if she would donate one of her kidneys -- to him. Again, she said yes. (That's one ballsy kid. We barely have enough courage to ask a cute co-worker to be Facebook friends.)
Kevin had undergone numerous surgeries, including a failed transplant, since the age of 3, when a complication from having blood drawn led to renal problems.
All seems to be fine now that super human being Jennifer Mazzotta-Perretti gave Kevin her kidney. We think it's safe to say that Jennifer deserves tenure.
Giving Life
Organ donations using living donors are increasingly common, as the list of patients in need of new organs continues to grow. Docs say it's rare for non-relatives to be such good matches, but it certainly does happen. Recently a cab driver gave a kidney to a woman he'd met while driving her to treatments.
Last week, a San Diego hospital announced that it had successfully performed a "paired-donor transplant." Patti Ford needed a kidney. Her husband Patrick wanted to donate, but wasn't a match. A donor coordinator put her in touch with Robyn and Paul Bryan -- Paul needed a kidney, but Robyn wasn't a match. The blood types aligned, so Robyn gave Patti one of her kidneys and Patrick gave Paul one of his.
What about you? Would you give a kidney to an acquaintance? How about a stranger?

Haven't a number of teachers been arrested for "giving their organ" to a student?

Why does it matter, the race of the student and the teacher? You talk about how horrible racism is, but really you're just making the problem worse.

Okay, so what was the point of pulling out the race card?? This is a wonderful story no matter what color you are! Its really great to hear about happy stories like this instead of Mackenzie sleeping with her father of what kind of shoes suri cruise is wearing, this is the important stuff!

Race IS an issue with regard to organ donation. Black people usually match up with other black people, whites with whites, asians with asians. I don't believe the comment was meant to be "racist." It is a known fact. Knock the chip off your shoulder and try to appreciate this story for it's happy ending.

I agree that she is a Super Woman. It is a very inspirational story, but she did know the boy personally. What would you do for a complete stranger??? I know a man who met another man in a hardware store, struck up a conversation, found out his young child needed a kidney. This man agreed to be tested to be a donor. Unfortunately, he was not a match, so his wife was tested. She will be donating her kidney to a precious child, that she had never met before! Now that is inspiational. That man is my brother and the brave, beautiful, selfless woman is my sister. Thanks again Brother for marrying the wonderful person that I call my sister!

I agree that this a heartwarming story and the teacher deserves praise. I do think the writer could have chosen a better word to describe the boy than "ballsy." I know it's common slang, but it seems a bit vulgar to me.

I also donated a kidney to my husband and it changed my life. I finally know what it feels like to do something for the sole benefit of someone else!

Thanks for the story, we agree that Jennifer Perretti is the greatest.
I'm Kevin's mom and his kidney problems were discovered by a blood draw, not caused by one.

Hey Ricardo,
What grade are you in? Only a moron could turn a compliment into trash, get your mind out of the gutter or crawl back into it, whatever suits you!

This is giving the best gift of all, and I admire her for it. She still has one, and the young man has a working one too. God bless them both, and may they have long and healthy lives.

I think it is inappropiate for a "teacher" to give any student a gift of such value. If she wished to give the student her virginity--the entire world would be say: "lock her up" if she gave him a graduation party the cops would bust it and again she would be in jail! Give an "A" on a test he failed the entire school would be under investagation. Deceide on what's ok for a teacher to "gift" and what is not? Double Standards here

To Mrs. O'Brien: Bless you all!! Your incredibly brave son, his marvelous and unselfish teacher, and most of all you! You have stood up admirably under the most trying of circumstances. It is hell to watch your child suffer, I know. And to have an almost total stranger come to the rescue must make it that much more special and precious. May your days get ever brighter as you watch your son become the young man he will grow to be.

This is a wonderful person - people were more giving years ago - when folks that lived next to each other actually spoke to one another and looked out for each other. God Bless Jennifer and Best Wishes to Kevin - I love to hear the good stuff!!!!
