MascaraWe love you, department store mascaras, but at upwards of $38 bucks a tube, you've just priced yourself out of our makeup bag. With so many mascaras on the market, finding your lash love is a lot like dating: One girl's fringe fright is another's gal's fancy, and it pays to shop around until you meet a mascara that clicks. And remember: One of the perennial best-selling mascaras (Maybelline's Great Lash) is and always has been a drugstore score.
Makeup BrushesBusted: The drugstore brands work just as well as their pricey department store counterparts. With both synthetic and natural hair brushes, the true trick to making your investment last is to keep your brushes clean. (Even here, you don't need a fancy cleanser; plain shampoo works just fine.) To clean your brushes properly, lather them up, rinse them off, and then hang them upside-down to dry instead of laying them flat -- it's the best way to preserve the shape of the brush.

Bikini WaxIf you're still going to the salon, stop. Over-the-counter waxes are exactly what you'll find at the spas, only without the tipping, paper undies and wagging your privates around total strangers. (Perk alert: You don't have to guess if it's sanitized or not.) With a little D.I.Y. savvy, you can be your own aesthetician-tipping optional.
Lip GlossPull out your purse: How many lip shines do you have in your bag right now? If the contents of your makeup bag make it look like you collect gloss the way old ladies collect cats, you can still keep on slickin' in the drugstore. With less expensive -- but still extensive -- options, and many glosses topping off at $1 or less, you can play the field.
Body Lotion If you're willing to skimp on fancy packaging, you can score a great deal on drugstore body lotions. The trick is to become a label-reader. For example, shea butter is a great, and relatively inexpensive, moisturizer -- the higher it's listed in the ingredients, the more that product contains. And as an added bonus, it also makes a great deep conditioner for hair.

Good God, never ever EVER under any circumstance attempt to wax your own bikini. I was a bruised, bloodied (yes, I bled) mess after I tried. And the worst part was I could only bushwack through two strips, so half of me looked like it had seen a war, while the other half was a stubbly mess.
It is a horrible idea to skimp on waxing! Shame on you, lemondrop!

Avon mascaras perform so much better than Great Lash, and you can usually get them every so often on sale. Last time I got 5 for $10.

Great Lash is a decent mascara at best. In drugstores there are SO MANY BETTER OPTIONS out there that outperform high end brands for under 10 bucks.
It's just a little pet peeve of mine for people to use Great Lash as a forerunner of all drugstore mascaras.

I have been using Great Lash for 30 years. I've tried expensive brands (Lancome,Estee, Bobbi Brow etc) in the gift with purchase bags but none are as good as my pink/green tube for $4.50

You can do your own bikini. Just don't do it the same way as legs e.g. great swathes at a time. If you do it inch by inch using the edge of the strip, that way you can get the pressure right and whip it off quick which stops bruising. Also in the 'undercarriage' area, the growth direction is not always the same so pay attention to that and it's much easier. Buy a special lotion to prevent ingrowing hairs as well and if you do it at night so you don't have to put underwear on straight away that will also help your skin settle. It's still not for the faint hearted and not a job you can rush - but it will save you money.

I love to buy my mascara at Walgreen's or CVS. I'm usually there for other things, but it is hard to ignore the fact that my favorite brand, Rimmel, is always at least $2.50 less than Ulta or other fabulous stores known for their makeup selection. Conversely, Ulta whips drug stores' collective arses in shampoo/conditioner prices (namely Garnier Fructis, my fave).

I get my makeup brushes in art stores. They are less expensive than at the drugstores, and they have a zillion sizes and shapes. just make sure you get the VERY soft ones.

While Great Lash is often considered the best drugstore mascara, i didn't like it all. I only buy mascara that says it is long lasting or smudgproof. There is a Maybelline in a silver tube that is good. also most Loreal and some Cover Girl. I guess we each have to try them and see what works for us. My bigger problem is eyliner. Most do not stay for me. Almay 16 hr didn't last even 6 hrs for me, though my teen nieces could wear it beautifully. I actually found the $1 liquid from E.I.F works fairly well and Loreal felt tip.
