On a recent trip to the movies ("District 9" -- see it, it rules) one of the previews seemed eerily familiar. The plot centered around a kid who's freaked out by the man his mother has suddenly married. When the freaky man in question turned to the camera and said, "Wait, who am I here?" I grabbed my friend and shook him so hard he dropped his Sourpatch Kids, and screamied, "THIS IS THE F---ING STEPFATHER!"
If you're asking yourself, "What's 'The Stepfather?'" then quick! Pour some boiling water on your thighs. That's from me. Because you should have seen this amazing film by now.
The original "Stepfather" (and oh, and there were sequels) was made in 1987 by master of cheese-horror, Joseph Ruben (who also directed "Sleeping With The Enemy" and "The Good Son"). It was loosely based on the real life story of one of the original Eraser Killers, John List. It follows the daughter of a widow who unwittingly remarries a homicidal maniac. Really, it's a cautionary tale about divorce, because if you break the sacred vows you made in front of God, you will inevitably sleep with someone who will try to murder your children.
The original Stepfather was played by Terry O'Quinn (whom you might know as Locke on a little show called "Lost"), and the role is being reprised by Dylan Walsh from "Nip/Tuck." In the 1987 version, the suspicious stepchild is a girl named Stephanie. In the 2009 version, it's, um, one of the boys from "Gossip Girl." No matter! Of course, I'll be first in line for the new Stepfather (I'll see ANYTHING with Sela Ward) and highly encourage you to rent the original, which is now (finally!) available on DVD.
